Greenwich Village

Once considered the Bohemian capital and the birthplace of the Beat movement in New York City, Greenwich Village is a gentrified neighborhood that is still defined by its alternative culture. The layout of the neighborhood symbolizes Greenwich Village’s dual personality: the widespread grid pattern of the east collides with the haphazard pattern in the west. Often called “The Village,” Greenwich Village is home to numerous universities, such as NYU, The New School and Cooper Union, where students can be seen at all hours. NYU dormitories and buildings surround the newly landscaped Washington Square Park. Young adults live in the apartments downtown of the campus, where hip cafes, bars, performance venues and progressive attitudes proliferate. Upper middle class families live in the row houses and mid-rise apartments that surround the neighborhood and can often be seen walking their small dogs in the Washington Square park dog runs. Although rising housing costs have pushed many of Greenwich Village’s original artists and musicians to other boroughs, The Village still has its independent culture.
