Located around the marshes of Jamaica Bay, Marine Park is a working class neighborhood with a strong community. Originally dominated by Irish and Italian immigrants, Marine Bay’s population has diversified in recent years to include Orthodox Jewish, African American and Asian communities. Residents live in reasonably priced single-family, semi attached houses and often live within a few blocks of extended family. Marine Park’s commercial areas include Flatbush Avenue and several other small shopping strips, allowing most locals to do their shopping within the neighborhood. The area is known for good schools and ample outdoor recreation in Marine Park, a public park that encompasses half of the neighborhood. Marine Park residents can often be found golfing in the park or strolling down the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets. However, the neighborhood’s strong community and comfort comes at a cost – Marine Park has no subway access.
