London Terrace Towers is a pre-war doorman co-op built in 1930 and designed by Farrar & Watmaugh and is composed of four corner buildings at Ninth and Tenth Avenues, containing approximately 710 apartments. The building numbers are 405 West 23rd Street, 465 West 23rd Street, 410 West 24th Street, and 470 West 24th Street. The mid-block buildings along 23rd and 24th Streets are known as London Terrace Gardens and, although built at the same time, are managed separately.
The following description appears in the American Institute to Architects Guide to New York City by Noval White/Elliot Willensky 1967, pg. 86 (taken from the London Terrace Towers website, http://www.londonterracetowers.com/).
This vast buff brick pile, in proto-modern planar style with faintly Gothic verticality, is actually two rows of connected apartment buildings flanking a block-long private garden. The name comes from a row of four-story houses that once stretched along the same 23rd Street frontages, facing the 18th Century Clarke mansion. When the building first opened, the doormen were dressed as London “bobbies” as a play on the name.
