The Upper East Side is synonymous with elegant, upscale living and Donald Trump recognized that The Delmonico Hotel, located at one of neighborhood’s most coveted addresses at Park and 59th Street, could be transformed into a luxury condominium development beyond compare.
The hotel was built in the late 1920s and Mr. Trump bought the property in 2001 for $115M and began conversion in 2004. Costas Kondylis & Partners, architects for many of Mr. Trump’s condo developments and numerous others throughout Manhattan, created 120 luxury homes, ranging in size from one to seven bedrooms.
The building, constructed of hand-laid brick with ivory terra-cotta trim, underwent a painstaking renovation that included adding 12,000 square feet of floor space and redesigning some of the building’s terraces into gorgeous, glass greenhouses. The hotel rooms within were transformed into gracious and luxurious homes containing the finest in technology and finishings. Reportedly, the renovation’s total cost was $100M.
The lobby has double-height, coffered ceilings, checkered, marble floors and wood-paneled walls. The ground floor houses Scully & Scully, a fine home furnishings retailer, but Trump Park Avenue’s most beautiful and grand feature is its tower, that contains 12 floors and gives 360 degree views of Manhattan. Mr. Trump is legendary for his over-the-top style and Trump Park Avenue is certainly no exception.
Impeccable finishings and precision detail went into each home to include solid oak flooring, Italian brass, handcrafted doorknobs and moldings throughout. Kitchens and bath have Watermark fittings and fixtures of polished nickel. Kitchens contain statuary white marble countertops and stainless-steel GE Profile appliances. Baths have marble floors, white wood cabinets and vanities with inset panels and deep soaking tubs.
Homes on the third and fourth floor have large units that were once the hotel’s ballrooms and have ceiling heights up to 15 feet. Floors five through 15 are one, two and three-bedrooms and terraced homes begin on the 16th floor.
Private elevators open onto the 20th floor and beginning there are 12 full-floor apartments. They range in size from over 4,000 to 7,000. Floors 31 through 32 holds the penthouse duplex that has a 17-foot aerie with vaulted ceilings, arched windows and very large terraces.
Trump Park Avenue is a landmark architectural marvel in one of the Upper East Side’s loveliest streets with Central Park as its backyard, international boutique shopping and world-renown restaurants, as well as five-star hotels such as the Four Seasons and The Plaza nearby. MoMA, Frick Mansion and the Whitney Museum are within walking distant, as are some of Manhattan’s most prestigious public and private schools.
The former hotel carries a colorful past; home to the “Breakfast Club” during the Prohibition years, the 1980s nightclub, Regine for the mega-rich and famous and celebrities have frequented here as well — Ed Sullivan and the Beatles, to name a few. As its developer, Mr. Trump, its reputation and history is one of glitz, glamour and glory.
