We are planning to add a temporary wall in the living room of our rental apartment to make it into an additional bedroom because of neighboring noise issues. Can anyone recommend a company to provide and install the wall? Our preliminary research has yielded the following companies in this area: Wallzilla, Wall 2 Wall, 1 Wall 2 Rooms, Room Dividers and The New York Wall Company. Has anyone had a temporary wall installed by any of these companies?

We used ny wall company. IT was fine. It was easy to get an appointment when I wanted. I only had 2 had 2 choices from the rental company so I had to use them or another one. I used the cheaper one. ALso try to make a deal - business is down

ccharley: Do you recall the name of the other company? About how long did it take once you selected the wall until the wall was installed? Have you had any problems with the wall and did you notice if the wall happens to reduce noise?

IT's pretty sturdy. My dd sleeps in the room we made and never wakes up. So it definitely keeps out the noise I can't remember the other company now but it was like $200 more so I didn't use them. I got an appt exactly when I wanted - super let me do it right before I moved in bc it would have been hard to get the furniture in thru the door. I think I gave them a week or 1 notice -I really don't remember

OH and we watch tv right outside the door really loud because my husband is hard of hearint

DO NOT USE THE NEW YORK WALL COMPANY!!! They put up and take down the wall fine but you'll never get your deposit back. Been trying to get mine back for nearly a year. The owner has given me his word over and over that he's sending out a check "at the end of the week" and finally another employee admitted to me I wasn't going to get it back, that they actually have had meetings in the office deciding not to send people deposits. This guy actually mocked me asking if I thought it was worth it to take them to court. If you search online there are plenty of other customers who haven't gotten their deposits back along with a bunch of complaints to BBB. It's not even really about the money... these guys just lie right to your face. Crooks. But don't just take my word for it:

Some other things to consider with temporary walls. If noise is an issue you might ask if they offer any kind of sound proofing, otherwise it's just two sheets of sheetrock with metal tension rods in between. If you plan to use carpets or rugs inside the room make sure they hang the doors high enough to give some clearance otherwise the door won't be able to open over the rug, etc. If you care about the aesthetics, try to find a company that actually will tape and mud the drywall seams. Otherwise, most of the companies I've seen just put a strip of wood over the seam which gives the whole thing a cheap look and feel.

Linden, Thank you so much for your advice. We're sorry that you had such a bad experience with the New York Wall Company. We were considering contacting them and now, thanks to you, we know better.

We spoke with our super this morning and he recommended using Manhattan Pressurized Walls. If anyone has used thie company, we'd appreciate any input.

I guess people can have really different experiences. We were totally happy with New York Wall Company. We agonized about a wall we needed to have built. We are using the room primarily as an extra living space, but it could also be an extra guest bedroom. We wanted something that would allow privacy when used as a guest area but would not block light when we used it as a living space. Our designer came up with these sliding opaque doors that were going to cost $15,000! Way over our budget. We decided to look into some cheaper options and ended up engaging New York Wall Company. They were great. They did it in one day. We ended up with windowed French doors. We had to arrange for blinds to be put over the French door windows so guests can have privacy. The cost was $2500. So we were really pleased with the price. They were great on every level. Showed up when they were supposed to and finished the job right on time for the price we agreed and did not leave a mess.

When you guys took down the wall, did you have to repaint? Did it damage the floors?

NY WALL uses the fact that most people would not take them to small claims court over $200-$300 to do two things:
not refund security deposit
use a small window around month end when everyone moves to claim they have no availability to remove the wall (although if you agree to pay them, they are definitely available)

the way they harass you on the phone when you call is definitely a sign that it's rehearsed and part of their standard operating procedure. use them at your own risk.

AptHunter265, thanks for the link to the ratings. We just made an appointment for the Manhattan Pressurized Wall company to come to our apartment Wednesday evening and we'll post here with what we find out with respect to pricing, etc.

spqsydney: They put up the wall just fine because they want to get paid, and they removed my wall just fine too, probably because they want the door and hardware back, AND if they didn't it could cause some liability on their part. Doesn't sound like you've tried to get your deposit back yet. Good luck.

aifamm: I'm pretty sure any wall company will paint the walls once they've installed them, and so you'll probably have some paint build up along the edges where the temporary wall meets your wall and where it meets the ceiling. I've had to scrap and sand this area and will repaint. No damage to the floors, but I'm in a pre-war where the floors are very durable. If I had newer floors that I know scratch more easily I would suggest having some cardboard ready and request they use a couple layers where the tensions rods meet the floor and ceiling.

On that site they have great reviews for PWNY. I don't see how they got them because they do not respond to e-mails and never pick up their phone.

AptHunter- same issue, called PWNY, no phone calls back, just VM with never a return call. i'm thinking GaryB might giving self promoting, i called several other companies, and this one is well priced and actually answers the phone.

Anyone get a wall put up recently?

One of my neighbors had a temporary wall installed by Manhattan Pressure Wall a few months ago. I think she told me that our building had 2 or 3 companies they would allow to work in the building, but I can check with her tomorrow. The wall looks pretty good and she told me that the people they sent to do the work were very good and cleaned up beautifully. Obviously, you can see the difference between the temporary wall and the apartment walls, but it really looks fine.

My building manager gave me some issues with putting a wall up. Are these things easy to sneak in?

Definitely not. She told me that there were 2 (maybe 3?) guys working there all day, banging and drilling- not quiet. If you need to section off an area and can't hire a company because building doesn't allow it, maybe buy a large screen to separate the areas.

Noise isn't an issue, just getting the stuff upstairs :)

AptHunter265, Since you are talking about sneaking a temporary wall into your apartment building and you are an anonymous person on a website, I don't feel that I could or should offer you an opinion as to whether a temporary wall is "easy to sneak in" your building.
