Now that the dollar is tanking tourists are the one bright spot, coming here and spending money. Why would you want to stop that?

Tourist dollars do very little to help the average New Yorker.

We had a renovation when Guiliani came in. He cleaned up NY. He got rid of the graffiti, squeegie guys and crime. Bloomberg has been continuing Guiliani's good work. Also there are all of these BIDs that have local businesses do neighborhood cleanup so our streets are clean. I think NY is the best it's ever been!

Tourists are a big plus for NYC. They buy our products and services. They pay sales taxes and room taxes. They require very little in the way of social services. And they're kinda quaint.

topper, yes, unless you have some urgent need to be in the times square area, or the fifth avenue shopping corridor, then they're not so quaint. but i shouldn't bitch. i actually like union square.

Continuous tourists dollars keep many NYers employed, and quite a few businesses alive.

Easy guys,NYCMatt made a couple of typos..

I think what he meant to say is that we will take every industry we can get. Yes tourism is extremely important to NY. Any industry that pays extraordinary taxes but is not allowed to vote is a bonus. Remember, we are a dying City and State when it comes to population and business growth. NYC's population has grown 6% since 1950. Anyone want to guess what the next 20 largest Cities and States have done over that time period.

The biggest problems we face are truly structural, who will foot the bill? Texas, Tennessee, Florida? Doubt it, keep your powder dry?

Q. How far can you throw a dead cat? about the same distance it takes to meet someone who says they are leaving NY because of yada, yada, yada.

So NYCMatt, is technically right, just in the wrong direction. WE WILL TAKE EVERY LAST FUCKING TOURIST DOLLAR ON EARTH! Ask any restaurant employee, taxi driver, airport worker, hotel employee, Broadway employee or hooker.
