Why? Do you need a place to stay?

There has been a shelter at 83rd and West End for twenty years. Other than giving a lot of privileged kids a chance to help less fortunate families with contributions of clothing and toys, the impact on the neighborhood has been nil. Most people don't even know the building is a shelter. From the outside, it looks like a perfectly ordinary West End rental building.

The shul at 100th and West End has also run a homeless shelter for decades. I echo W81st's comments -- don't believe the community is impacted by it except as it offers a chance to volunteer and learn more about this terrible problem.

W81- didn't know it was there. Do you know if you can just stop by to drop stuff off or if you need to contact them beforehand?

Did you know that the 2 westernmost (?) townhouses (one with an unusual porch) on the South West of 77th St across from P.S. 87 are owned by a coalition for the homeless... Apparently taken over by the city for pennies in the day and turned over to a non-profit.

off topic... W81 and 10023 - you are both so knowledgeable about kids and the UWS. I'd like to pick your brians about something. Can I send you an email?

uwsmom: Sure - just put my SE screen name in front of "@gmail.com".

Re. dropping off contributions, my wife handles the logistics; I just push the cart. Normally, I think you can simply show up. Special programs - e.g. Christmas gifts to specific kids to meet their particular needs - require advance planning and communication. I would suggest you contact the program administrators in any case. Here's the info page: http://intergenerational.org/howyoucanhelp.php

I hope everyone donates to something to the needy this Christmas. There are people out there with literally nothing. Please donate used coats or new toys for kids.

Anyone have any updates on this? There was an article in the Post a few days ago that a Lantern building on 94th will be converted to a MICA facility. Any additional info would be helpful.

I feel like there are a few SROs up there as well. I don't think one building would have such an impact on the overall neighborhood, given how established. Though if you are on the same block, I could imagine just on that block having an impact (as it did on W 25th between 6 and 7)

When I lived on the UWS it was all SRO's and Cuban-Chinese restaurants. LOL!
