Discussion about 2056 Fifth Avenue in Central Harlem
Care to share?
I'm interested in this building.
Every board and almost every management company are a wreck. you get what you pay for.
Why don't you join the board and fix things? It is easier to write nasty notes on SE, but probably less effective...
Dear Floetikjustice,
I am sorry to hear of your negative experience. As an owner/resident and former board member, I've had a fantastic living experience at 2056 Fifth Avenue. We are a small, close knit building that feels like a community rather than a collection of individual apartments. It is the first building in Manhattan where I know and socialize with the majority of my neighbors. I've found it to be a fun and welcoming environment, and I would highly recommend living here to friends, acquaintances and strangers alike.
Therefore, I feel you are being a little unfair with your comments. While you are of course entitled to your opinions, and your experiences may have been different than mine, I think you should disclose why you feel that way before disparaging the building, board, or management.
For example, a basic google search confirmed for me who you are. You are a renting tenant who moved in without a proper lease approved by the building and did not follow the building move in protocol. Naturally, as an unapproved tenant, who, until the Board later ratified your lease, was not even a legitimate resident, the Board or the Management would not be responsive to you, or be helpful, as would be the case at any other building. I am not saying the situation was your fault, however, I don't think it's a negative reflection of the building either.
I can only imagine, that getting caught in the middle of such a situation, would give you a negative view of the board, or taint your impression of your time at the building. But, as I mentioned up top, it is only fair to disclose your biases before making such sweeping statements. To anyone considering the building, I want to reiterate how wonderful the living experience has been for me and I would encourage you to come by to see for yourself.
Sincerely,
2056 Resident
There is no gas or hot water in my unit and elsewhere in the building, and it's been that way since Wednesday. You KNOW that. I have also had no electricity throughout my unit from time to time, and my landlord has refused to anything about it. I can't use my bathroom because the faucets and toilet don't work. Those are just facts.
The conditions of my move into the building are a primary reason for why I am writing this review. You state that you don't say the situation was my fault, and that is because you cannot--it was not my fault. Yet, you seek to discredit me anyway. I followed all of the proper protocol as it was explained to me, and yet I was jerked around by the broker, the owner of my unit, the condo board and the management company for four long months. During these months, I paid rent on time every month, as I always have. I kept being asked to submit bank check after bank check, and then it would be returned to me, and then I was told I could move in, could not move, could move in on certain dates, that I would be fined, that I would be sued, that they were so sorry I was going through this, that it was all the board's fault, that it was all the management company's fault, that it was all my fault--for four whole months of my tenancy! During this time, I was constantly humiliated and made to feel like a pariah in the building, for no reason of my own...no one wants to feel like that in their home. It was nightmarish, and I feel that I have never recovered. Why would I keep silent about this? Why would I be a part of the StreetEasy community and not provide fellow community members with information that could help them avoid the situation in which I found myself? You likely know very well what happened with the circumstances of my move into the building, and how screwed up it was for me...and you KNOW and concede that it wasn't my fault, so why even go there? Does that really classify as bias?
Your mention of me being a "renting tenant" is also reflective of how I've felt as a "renting tenant" in the building. At 2056, unless you're an owner, you're a nobody. And yet the rent is not cheap. Why wouldn't I encourage other "renting tenants" to go elsewhere? Perhaps there are also some owners out there who prefer to have gas and hot water and electricity in their units? Some who don't want constant plumbing issues and leaks/floods?
I'm glad you enjoyed googling me. I'm sure that based on your search you probably gleaned that I'm not the type of person who really enjoys being bullied or taken advantage of, and that it's in my nature to try to protect others.
Sounds like you Floe should rant about his landlord, not the building.
All condo and coop boards suck. It's people who donate their time to running a corporation. You get what you pay for...
Buy a townhouse if you want peace.
Best bet, really, is to rent in a *rental* building, and avoid renting in condos and co-ops altogether.
That's true Matt. No delays you move in on time.
floe: HPD. Call 311. They will connect you. File complaint. 2056resident won't mind since there are no violations to be found there.
