i am thinking about painting the trim in my living room a dark color as the walls are an off-white and i think the contrast would be attractive. the problem is my windows: they are steel frame double-hung finished in white (i'm not sure if they're painted or powder-coated, but it's a high gloss finish). should i sand the frames down, prime and paint them, or just leave them alone? i'm afraid the dark trim will draw too much attention to them. any thoughts?
Leave them alone and work with the white. Anything you attempt to do will look much worse than what you already have.
Since you don't know what the finish is like on the trim, you might want to try a deglosser instead of sanding. Just an idea.
They're probably powder coated as most of the metal windows. I suggest you leave them alone.
Totally agree w/ the others. I have never seen metal windows that have been painted by a homeowner that looked better than the original factory finishes. The paint will be hard to clean, and look grubby quickly. Leave them alone until you have to replace the entire unit.
