I want to add a built-in soap dispenser next to the faucet in my kitchen. The dispenser requires that a hole be drilled into the stone. I have what is called "basaltina" stone, it's some sort of lava stone.

I would like to install this myself as I am somewhat handy (meaning, I own a good drill) however if I screw it up and destory a piece of my stone countertop, thats a huge $$$ mistake. anybody ever do this? anybody know a guy downtown that could do it for me, a place I should call?

find a good stone grinder that fits on the drill and go really slow. give yourself enough space. you'll be fine.

A stone grinder?? To drill a hole in limestone??

You need a diamond hole saw and a partner to spray with water it while drilling. The hole saw will cost you $30-40, so you might try a tile or countertop shop to see if they can do it for you.

when i had my granite counters installed, the guy attached a stone grinder (looks like a ball with diamond specs) on his dewalt drill and went at it for a few minutes. there was no finesse or technicality to it.
