It will be interesting to know if the crane was secured in advance. Did they weld blocks onto the crane to prevent it from moving?
Why didn't they take it down?
Aren't they expensive? Aren't they worth keeping safe (from the builder's POV)? Even if it was in vacant area where no threat of hurting others, I would want to keep my equipment safe and working right.
Just seems stupid.

Often when you hear about stuff like this, you later learn that someone was trying to save money. Read Gary Barnett is very concerned.
and sometimes you hear that someone made a mistake.
and sometimes you hear that despite best efforts and practices, something went wrong.
but the important thing is to speculate in advance of having any facts particularly if you speculate about conspiracy, collusion and graft.

Chris Christie is angry at the Mayor of Atlantic City.
Christie told the residents to evacuate.
The dopey Mayor told them to stay in Atlantic City and use the local shelters, one of which is a school
located right next to the bay.
Now, they are stranded there, and Christie is giving his news conference; telling them "If any of you can still hear me, you have to stay until tomorrow morning. The worst is coming up in an hour and I can't put rescue teams in danger to go in and rescue you, especially in the darkness..."
Of course, leave it to columbiacounty to give someone the benefit of the doubt on conspiracy, collusion and graft.

Although CC, Barnett is know to play fast and loose with the law. At Rushmore, claiming a typo to avoid contractual obligations -- which 3 courts said was not a typo. And in this building, he took advantage of a loophole to get out of providing low income housing in the building. As insane as it is, the owner of the penthouse gets a $200,000 tax abatement.

anything is possible, but consider whether or not this guy is so hands on that he is talking to the crane people and saying don't worry about tying it down. it just seems hard to believe. as i understand it, the crane downtown on the freedom center wasn't taken down and hasn't fallen down.

Because it took WEEKS just to get it up there in the first place. Those giant cranes are actually carried up there, piece by piece, assembled, then disassembled after the building is done, and brought down ... again, piece by piece.

The crane that collapsed at One57 was not tied down, Donald Trump told CNBC. According to Trump, he could see the crane from his window and it was moving violently in the wind before it collapsed. Trump is not involved with the One57 project.
“I know lots about cranes and lots about building, and I am looking at that crane right now,” Trump said. “I have a window that’s just about even with that crane and I was watching it yesterday, and they didn’t tie it down.”
