This building is on the corner of a block that houses a shul, the Russian Embassy, and a fire station. Is this the worst block in the city - or maybe the safest? I'm on the fence and need some input.

If you're looking at 5F, I think it faces east (directly over shul and firehouse) and that is why it is down to $599k and still unsold. IMHO

It is worth checking the rule for when sirens are turned on coming into or out of the fire station. I know that ambulences, for instance, have to turn their sirens off within a few blocks of a hospital. It might not actually be a big deal to be near the fire house, but worth checking into the actual regulation.

As for the neighborhood, it's a good, central location: near the 6 subway and crosstown bus, lots of restaurants and decent shopping, very short walk to Central Park, and IMHO, you are north just enough from the horrible traffic around Bloomingdale's and 59th Street bridge so that it doesn't feel quite as hectic as it does a few more blocks south.

Thanks for your comments. Can you tell me what IMHO is? Sorry to be novice at this.

No problem - "in my humble opinion"

that block also has the 19th precinct and I believe the crosstown bus. Its loud and not a very pretty block.

Plus the hustle & bustle of Hunter College & 68th St subway station.

Suggest you spend some time there during AM & PM rush hrs to see if it's too busy for you.

It's a great area, but, it's a busy block, esp. by Lex.

its actually very quiet in the building itself. The street is busy but not more than most in the area and, except for the bus and usual NYC traffic, its not noticeable. There is a lot of foot traffic. With the police and fire dept (and russians across from the synogogue), its well patrolled and very safe. Completely close to everything

Hi all, any other thoughts on this? I'm planning on buying a studio on the south side... seems very close to the stations. Do they turn their sirens on while on that block?
