Rental of the Week

Sprawling Duplex 1BR in Murray Hill Asks $2,300

Calling all work-from-home New Yorkers! Our Rental of the Week is a remote worker’s dream come true. This Murray Hill duplex is basically a full, spacious 1-bedroom apartment upstairs, with a big bonus room and half-bath downstairs. That’s right, your new home office is an entire floor, with its own separate bathroom! And when we say big, we’re not kidding: This apartment spans a whopping 1,000 square feet. All for well below the area’s average rent.

Address: 238 E. 36th St. #A

Price: $2,300

Size: 1-bedroom

Neighborhood: Murray Hill

Best feature: We’re talking 1,000 square feet, spread over two floors, in Manhattan, all for you! This is a tremendous amount of space — the downstairs can easily be considered a second bedroom suite (though it lacks a door). You can set it up as an office and still have plenty room left for a pullout couch or guest bed. Or a craft station, or an art studio, or the walk-in closet of your wildest dreams.

But this Murray Hill duplex has lots of other great features, beyond just space. The hardwood floors are pristine. The gleaming white kitchen boasts full-size appliances, including a dishwasher. The full bath upstairs is decked out in fancy-looking marble tile. And the two floors are connected by real, solid stairs, not just a floating spiral staircase.

Why it’s a deal: Murray Hill and its neighbor, Kips Bay, are submarkets of the greater Midtown East neighborhood. The median asking rent in Midtown East is $2,800, according to StreetEasy’s Data Dashboard. That puts our Rental of the Week at a full $500 per month below average for the area.

Biggest drawback: Despite being so close to midtown, this a very residential area with plenty of restaurants and grocery stores. (This Murray Hill duplex is within quick walking distance of a Fairway, a Trader Joe’s, and a D’Agostinos!) However, the neighborhood is also home to the Queens Midtown Tunnel and the many hospitals along First Avenue. This brings a lot of traffic to the area, so street noise might be an issue.
