Upper Manhattan neighborhoods like Hamilton Heights have been increasing in popularity in recent years — you do tend to get more for your money uptown, after all — but there are still plenty of great apartments at great prices within the area. Our Deal of the Week, a 1,000-square-foot uptown 2-bedroom/2-bathroom inside a turn-of-the-century townhouse, is a case in point: Let’s check out 453 W. 143rd St. #6.
Buyers who pay the 10% minimum down payment of $74,000 can expect to see monthly payments of $4,160. This includes a mortgage payment of $3,160, common charges of $513, and monthly taxes of $487.
The median asking price for an apartment in Hamilton Heights is $699,987, while the median for Upper Manhattan in general is $750,000, according to the latest StreetEasy Market Report. While this uptown 2-bedroom sits a bit above the neighborhood’s median ask, it is huge and packed with plenty of amenities.
This home has prewar charm throughout, from the wood trim around the windows to the wood-burning fireplace in the living room. Even better, there is lots of storage space: 10-foot ceilings allow for each closet to have a second overhead counterpart, perfect for storing luggage and out-of-season clothing.
The living/dining area, from which there is access to a balcony large enough for furniture, flows into the kitchen, which is delineated by hexagonal floor tiles and has plenty of light from two windows and plenty of cabinet and counter space. The master bedroom is big enough for a king-size bed and has a gorgeous bay window and a full en-suite bath, while the second bathroom houses a stackable washer and dryer, so laundry will always be a breeze.
Transportation will also be uncomplicated with the A, B, C, D, and 1 trains all within easy walking distance. There are also several neighborhood parks nearby, to get a jog or bike ride in, and loads of restaurants on Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway for a nice meal out.

Like many NYC 2-bedrooms, the second bedroom here is small: You can squeeze in a queen-size bed, according to the listing, but it probably won’t be able to fit much else. And the copious amounts of wood — paneling, trim, kitchen cabinets, everywhere — might not be to everyone’s taste. But for an uptown 2-bedroom at a great price, this is one to keep in mind.
