Buying a new home during a pandemic is no easy task. But the show must go on! In a year of highly disruptive shifts in the New York City real estate market, city apartment hunters proved to be super intrepid. We sifted through the most loved listings of the past year to find the homes “saved” by the most StreetEasy shoppers. Let’s look back at some of the most popular NYC apartments for sale in 2020 — before we (happily) move on to 2021.

The first of our most popular NYC apartments is actually a full house. Old-school Brooklyn was the draw for more than 1,000 StreetEasy shoppers who loved this Boerum Hill townhouse. The three-story structure is configured as a 2-family, but listing agents Michael DiMartino and Elizabeth DiMartino at Brownstone Real Estate smartly marketed it as a fabulous opportunity for a single-family dream-home renovation. The sales pitch worked; it went into contract on December 5.

A landmarked building in historic Brooklyn Heights is always a big draw. This prewar gem proved that point, generating more than 800 saves in its short 60 days on the market. Spacious and charming, it offers high, beamed ceilings, built-in bookcases, and period detail. There’s plenty of natural light, too, through double windows in both the living room and the bedroom. Victoria Bongiovi at Compass represented the listing.

Another reliably big draw? The West Village. This 2-bedroom was the most popular of our most popular NYC apartments of the year, with more than 1,500 saves! On iconic Christopher Street, this home offers an incredible price to go with the location. It also boasts incredibly flexible co-op rules, with the ability to use it as a primary residence, a pied-à-terre, or a sublet rental. Ryan McGuirl at Bold represents the listing, now in contract.

This jewel-box, 1-bedroom duplex was a big hit as soon as it hit the market. It was featured as StreetEasy’s most popular listing of the week back in August, eventually becoming one of the most popular NYC apartments of the year with more than 1,100 saves. This stylish loft offers a meticulous renovation from high-end finishes to all-new plumbing and electrical. It’s set in the Bleecker Court co-op, which offers all the best of Greenwich Village just outside its front door. The listing, from Alan Chorm at Douglas Elliman, is now in contract.

Oh look, here’s another former most popular sale of the week! Murray Hill is always a great neighborhood for value on Manhattan’s East Side. And that’s exactly with this Tudor City 1-bedroom delivers — along with a super stylish and functional renovation. The landmarked prewar co-op building offers a gym, a laundry room, bike storage, a landscaped courtyard, and more. But the allure of this bright apartment, from Joel E. Moss at Warburg, stands out on its own: It’s now under contract.

Further south in the East Village we find our next most popular NYC apartment for 2020. And it’s a beauty, with beamed ceilings, two levels, and loads of natural light. More importantly, it boasts the number one most-wanted amenity during these pandemic times: outdoor space. In fact, it’s got both a balcony and a private rooftop terrace! No wonder it’s generated more than 1,100 saves from StreetEasy shoppers. And counting — this one’s still on the market! Contact a StreetEasy Expert on the listing for details. We end our tour with a classic Upper West Side prewar that’s also still on the market. This gracious 2-bedroom co-op sits on a tree-lined block right near Riverside Park. A foyer entry with closet eases you in, and the second bedroom has both a door from the entry and French doors from the living room. The renovated kitchen sports a window and dishwasher. A recent price improvement makes this one even more enticing. Contact a StreetEasy Expert on the listing for details.
