Carnegie Hill

Brimming with historic charm and contemporary cultural relevance, Carnegie Hill is a crown jewel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Beyond convenient park access, the neighborhood is home to a long stretch of Museum Mile — a smorgasbord of diverse art institutions that stretches along Fifth Avenue for, you guessed it, a mile.

At a Glance

After industrialist Andrew Carnegie built an impressive mansion at 91st Street and Fifth Avenue in 1901, other wealthy city dwellers began to flock to this area and build their own grand digs. Thus began the development of Carnegie Hill, whose modern-day iteration boasts endless convenience in an opulent aesthetic. Over 100-year-old structures can be seen perfectly preserved in the Carnegie Hill Historic District. But this neighborhood is decidedly not stuck in the past, as evidenced by its plethora of contemporary boutiques, bookstores, cafes and restaurants — not to mention the many, many museums along Fifth Avenue dedicated to showcasing modern art and culture. Carnegie Hill even earned a spot on StreetEasy’s list of NYC Neighborhoods to Watch in 2024.

Food & Drink

Cozy eateries and cafes can be found nestled throughout the residential streets across Carnegie Hill, contributing to a sense of integrated community rather than a distinct restaurant row or nightlife section. The French Pascalou and Italian Sfoglia are local favorites, and be sure to grab a gourmet Italian sandwich from Milano Market.
