For $35M in Tribeca, J.Crew Guru Selling a Lot More Than Window Dressing

Hold on while we scan our catalogue of adjectives. We need to order up an appropriately long and breathless list of superlatives to start talking about the key player in this latest bit of celebrity news.

Because when it comes to Mickey Drexler (The Gap, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, and now CEO of J.Crew and Madewell) and the 6,226-square-foot Tribeca residence the retail guru has just walked down the real estate runway, there’s no way to summarize the man or the abode.

But here goes: Retail legend who has sold billions in women’s clothing lists Tribeca apartment for $35 million.

Drexler, 70, has been having a rough go of it lately with J. Crew, which he recently admitted had a “lousy year” in 2014 with sales listless at about $621 million. Whether the troubles with J. Crew and Drexler’s move are coincidental, we don’t know.

What we do know is that Drexler’s condo at 140 Franklin Street has been listed for sale just three years after he purchased the sprawling unit in the 12-unit Historic Loft Building for $14.3 million.

The building is boutique, of course, luxurious and staff with a 24-hour doorman and Drexler’s decked-out unit is “arguably the best simplex floor plan in Tribeca,’’ according to listing agent Adam Modlin of the Modlin Group.

The apartment was designed by architect Thierry Despont and features a 20-foot long gallery that leads to an 82-foot long grand salon that features 11-foot ceilings, wide plank Brazilian wood floors, original columns and arched windows. The views of downtown Manhattan abound.

The split bedroom layout offers a private master suite, which adjoins a master study. The guest wing includes 3 bedroom suites, a sitting room and 4.5 baths with staff quarters and laundry room.

The New York Daily News is also reporting that Drexler is also the seller for this $26.5 million listing at 120 Beach Lane in the Wainscott area of East Hampton. See photos below:
