The Upper West Side townhouse that Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner used to own with his amicably ex-wife, Jane Wenner, is under contract. The 7,200-square-foot townhouse at 37 West 70th Street had been listed for sale for $17.95 million last November but appears headed out of the congenial extended family’s real estate portfolio.
Wenner and his ex officially divorced a few years back so that Wenner could marry his long-time boyfriend, Matt Nye, but the entire clan — including Jane and Jann’s three children and the three kids Matt and Jann have had via surrogate — are still connected through kids, media holdings and real estate.
Jane and Jann bought the 1891-built brownstone in 1981, according to The Real Deal, and Jane bought out Jann in 2010 for a little over $4 million, according to closing documents. The 20-foot wide townhouse covers five stories loaded with 7 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 7 fireplaces and a wine cellar. The Wenners bought the building from the estate of clothing designer Perry Ellis, then had the place re-designed for modern living.
Wenner and Nye, meanwhile, still own a brownstone nearby at 27 West 74th Street, in addition to many other properties around the U.S., including a country home in upstate New York, a ski condo in Ketchum, ID and an estate in the Hamptons, close to the estate Wenner and Jane used to own but he sold to her for $17.57 million.
Jane and Jann Wenner continue to draw profits from Wenner Media, though the company is apparently held in trust for their kids and other family members. In addition to Rolling Stone, which has survived the decades since Wenner introduced the rock ‘n’ roll world to America through its groundbreaking pages, the company publishes Us Weekly and Men’s Journal.
