You want to go with throw pillow & drapes, things easily changed, for "in" & a classic, timeless golden or brown tone for the floors since you'll not be changing them every 18 months.

I am not understanding much on this forum today; what is jacobean stain?

Very Olde English stain?

What color is that?

Whatever it is, medium oak-toned brown is good for most stains.

Jacobean is a dark brown,

BB- Not everyone loves it but some designers are going with a jet black floor

A really dark floor, regardless what you call it, is great for three things: looking trendy and so-yesterday before the poly dries, showing every speck of dust, and showing every scratch including those made by a vacuum cleaner or a dog's paws.

According to the interior design magazines, current trends seem to favor pickled (again; they're back) or light stains. While it's hard to make suggestions without knowing someone's taste, style, and the era and look of an apartment's interior, I favor floors that are timeless and neutral, including old fashioned golden oak (especially for pre-war original herringbone oak floors) and medium-dark walnut stains. Choose ones that will still be beautiful regardless how a room is decorated and how many years you'll live in a place.

In other words, I agree with drdrd.

I think Golden oak is nice if you wanyt it to look like a rental. Funny how the designers i work with are all wrong about dark floors are so-yesterday

surely it's occured to you that both you and all these fabulous designers you work with make your living on the built in expiration date of your product as well as people's petty insecurities about such significant things like the stain of their floors? and surely a contractor's bitchy little snip about rentals should and will be taken at face value. you have yourself a nice day now, mr. primer.

Not sure what's in or out, but next time I'm picking floors, I'm going for the wide herringbone pattern exactly like that:

Check the bedroom pic in large format for a good look at the style and color.

Lucillebluth,

Are you ok? Why is my comment a bitchy comment. If you look at most rentals they have the golden oak look. When you stain floors in a deeper dark color they look more rich.

It seems that the only reason you are here is to put down people and that is a little sad

i appologize for making you sad. you are clearly a contractor who FEELS for the people on this board, including little ole lucille. thank you for that. you can play as dumb as columbiacounty here and pretend to misunderstand my post, but you should know he really isn't playing, he's that dense. you are playing, and if you wish to continue, we certainly can.

Lucille,

I don't think I have ever seen your posts or responded to any of them but if you have read my posts I think you would see that I do in fact care about people. Contractors have very bad reputations as many should but not all of us are like that. Just like any other profession. I am willing to help anyone on this board and I am not just talking about the ones that hire me. I do in fact understand your post, I just don't understand what your point of writing was

this is neither helpful not professional. and unlike me, you are a real person here. so what was the point of YOU writing this?

i just did my floors too. dark walnut in the water based stain is better than jacobean- jacobean is iffy- it's too dark and looks bad with the sun hitting it.

Primer05: You're right that golden oak is associated with the floors of a lot of crappy rentals, but I think those are, for the most part, crappy floors. I think a really nice herringbone or Versailles parquet floor looks best in a light brown shade like golden oak: dark enough to look formal and enrich highlights; light enough so that details are clearly visible. Also, as an inveterate ruggie, I think good hand-woven rugs look great against golden oak. Yes, the shade is cliche, and it has graced countless tons of cheap flooring. It's also classic, and enduring.

I just saw a seven at Astor Court with black-stained floors (details in the Open House Reports thread). I thought the choice was wrong for the setting - more Don Johnson than John J. Astor. The dark color also made me wonder what they were hiding.

What a complete and utter asshole. Japan is facing serious destruction and continued threat, meanwhile this idiot is again on streeteasy making ethnic jokes, this time for some reason about Japanese people. Which ethnic group is next to be the butt of your jokes?

Lucille,

I think my comment is helpful. I started out saying that most of the designers I work with go with the darker colors. It is my opinion that golden oak floors is like a rental, why? Because that is what rentals have, almost all of them. Why is it not professional? That has nothing to do with being professional or not.

I think West 81 makes a very valid point. I did a very nice renovation at Astor Court that had golden oak floors and it did work in that apartment. So I stand corrected.
