before the 1920’s these apartments were only allowed to be used as servants’ quarters. They were just shacks put up on the roof because there was no room left in the building itself. But then people started to realize how nice it was up on the roof, and they kicked the servants out. Given the tightness of the NYC real estate market (even 100 years ago) most of these apartments were then expanded significantly to increase indoor living area, leaving only a little bit of roof deck. But THIS one was not. It is still a tiny little house in the middle of an enormous roof.
