What i forgot to add was A train commute from washington heights 180th/190th. When the A is working like it should be, without all the current changes, how awful is it really, with all the tunnels, elevators, commmute time, weekends etc Found the perfect apt to buy and like the area the only downside is the A train so can't decide. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
it depends on the time of day you are traveling and the day of week. There is a HUGE difference between riding the A on a Tuesday morning at 8 AM and riding at 10 PM on a Sunday. At night the trains run 20 minutes apart.
I have no idea what you're talking about. Is this a follow-up to a previous thread? If so, please post it there.
For a time I commuted from 175th Street to 59th Street/ Columbus Circle on the A. Station-to-station travel time took about 12 minutes.
My experience at night and on the weekends, however, is that not only does the train run local (which in itself isn't too bad -- the local stops really only add about an additional 10 minutes or so), but the trains run every *30* minutes. So if you just missed catching the train, find yourself a comfy bench and a good book -- it'll be a LOOOOONG wait for the next train.
And for this "service" they wanted to charge us $103/month???
Two friends of mine commute from Inwood to midtown; they have been doing this for five or six years now, and they do not work the 9-5 M-F schedule. It takes us 30-40 minutes on the train to visit them on weekends. MTA service cuts are a factor, but I think it is doable.
You didn't say where you are commuting to. I would catch the A at 175th to an office in eastern Soho and with the walk over, it would take 40 minutes in the morning. As the others have said, daytime during the week - no problem. Nights and weekends? A pain.
But I often catch the D which runs express almost all the time and switch at 145th when I'm out late.
