HDLC -- that one's hilarious! Definitely my favorite listing in a long time!!! Hope springs eternal. I wonder if the squatters are of the highly-overprivileged variety.

If someone would have said "squatters will return" pre-crash, I would have noted it as crazy hyperbole...

whoah, did i not expect this.

the listing is no longer available. maybe the squatters presented a counteroffer?

Maybe the squatters chose to exercise their right to creative control over any planned restoration/renovation/redecoration.

ar, i agree thats a bad sign, too. But thats a financial sign, to me squatters are financial + problems with the rule of law.

Did they cut the number of cops yet?

last i had read the only actual cuts had come in administrative staff. so cops were having to do more of their own paperwork. but given how many they've seemed to move to writing parking tickets, to make some cash, it seems there must be fewer hours spent fighting actual crime.

and they cancelled the most recent academy class, i believe. i don't recall if that already occurred or not. but i haven't seen the recruits recently, and they train in my neighborhood.

yeah, the academy class was cancelled. and I think you're right on paperwork.

I wonder what this has translated to in terms of reductions as far as actual street walking and policing goes. I'm guessing we're already seeing the effects.

btw, they also happen to be moving the academy... to queens. to get everything in one place (shooting ranges, etc.)

saw DD's financials once.... the profit margin on a cup of coffee is $1 in nyc, a dozen donuts (if they make it themselves $5/dozen). Average sq.ft. 1000 (let's say $100 psf rents = $9K monthly rental). Employees = 4 employees at $12hr, 12hr days, 7 days a week... call it $20K month).... electric, water misc. $10K month.... $39K month to break even... .or 1,300 cups of coffee/ day or 109 cups/hour.. let's call donut sales profit for franchisee... and say 20 dozen/ day... or $3K per month.... seems pretty doable... esp. when doing multi units (I think 10 minimum in nyc) so you are looking at $300K for franchisee... as my prospective tenant said... it's effective labor cost that'll make or break you.....

too fast.. .$360K/ yr profit for 10 unit franchisee... so you buy yourself a decent paying job on par w/ a 2nd yr banker... but you gotta "make the donuts."

there was an e-mail blast back in march that went out to all squatters and homeless folks that is was time to get back to work. Most had been off duty since the latter portion of the Rudy administration. Spoke to one homeless guy who told me that he had spent the last few years in Maui and was very dissapointed to recieve that e-mail. As he said to me, "what are you going to do? if your a professional and you get the call...you hit the streets".
