Neighborhood Description
Once considered part of Flatbush, Kensington is one of the best examples of a melting pot in New York City. Kensington has several prominent immigrant communities living within its borders, including Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Hasidic Jewish, Russian and Caribbean populations. Residents tend to cluster according to ethnicity, as demonstrated by the section of McDonald Avenue known as “Little Bangladesh,” the Russian prominence to the west and Caribbean influence to the south. However, the different groups are friendly –mosques can be found near synagogues and the area has pleasantly international selection of restaurants. Real estate in Kensington consists of two-and three family homes, small apartment buildings and high-rise apartment buildings along Ocean Parkway. The area is less expensive than its neighbors, a major attraction for young families and professionals who are looking for an alternative to Park Slope. Kensington is popular for its low prices, diversity, safety and green space. However, its commercial districts, the main one centering on Church Avenue, are not as developed as in other areas, leaving some residents wishing for more entertainment, shopping and food options.
