Discussion about
Hi all, I have never used movers before. But now that I've finally left prolonged adolesence and have a job that pays decently, I figured it was time for my partner and I to move in together the grown-up way. I got a quote from FlatRate Movers for 1440 for full pack/unpack service to move 2 separate studio apartments uptown into a one bedroom downtown. Any thoughts? All comments are super appreciated.

You should get the estimate to specify the materials to be moved in as
much detail as possible, and to also address time charges for things like
waiting or taking "too long" to deliverm and for working outside of a 8-5
time frame. Also pay attention to how your possessions are packed, and to
"extra charges" for things like packing cartons and time spent packing.

that doesn't sound too bad. i used flatrate (and was very pleased with them) and paid about $950 to move a 1 br about 10 blocks. they will charge you for any supplies you request from them prior to the move but won't charge for anything they use the day of.

I think you're getting charged about 50% more to move from 2 places to 1. Is there any way you can consolidate to one place w/o movers?

We just had one of our best moving experiences in 40 years. The company was Movers Not Shakers, located in Brooklyn. We had an extremely complicated move involving two houses and an apartment in two states, a hundred miles apart. The professionalism began before the move, with the right-on-target estimate of $1400. The crew was ultra-professional. They arrived early, worked hard, were pleasant and polite, and had creative ideas for problems we had not anticipated. Nothing fazed them. We did not need pack-unpack services, so our estimates can't be compared very well. However, their website is very detailed and you'll get a correct estimate from them. That should help you decide amongst competitors. Good luck. BTW, this is my first opportunity to recommend that company and I'm happy to be able to do it.

Why does everyone make fun of the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing? How offensive!

That moving company would never get away with it if they were called Movers Not Roman Catholics. Ultra-professional or not.

Flatrate is a price gimmick. You think you are getting a low rate. NOT.

AH, that's because when you don't breed, all the world has to remember you by is furniture. And furniture can't complain, it simply gets moved.

Buy your own packing supplies at Public Storage or Home Depot and save a few bucks. I like Public Storage because they have more selections and prices are much cheaper.

"simply gets moved"
... SIMPLY? Haven't you read all these threads about 4-figure moving costs. It's the Shakers' revenge!

I will gladly pay 4 figures to have someone else pack/move/unpack my Shaker furniture. Besides my time being more valuable on a pay-per-hour basis, I've learned that the professionals are probably 3x more efficient and have access to materials at 1/3rd the price of retail.

My advice - let them pack, and then you unpack. Otherwise you'll spend weeks looking for things. It's better to unpack slowly, and put things exactly where you want them.
