Chelsea being one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York City, it might not be the place you think of for great apartments in the six-figure range. But there are some great apartments to be found for under $1M, like 319 W. 18th St. #3D. Our Deal of the Week is a 1-bedroom in an Art Deco elevator building in the heart of Chelsea.

Why you’ll love it…

Several closets throughout this unit provide tons of storage. You’ll find two in the entryway, a double-door closet outside the bathroom, and one with sliding doors in the bedroom. There’s also a window in every room, including the bathroom and kitchen, to keep the apartment bright throughout the day. Curved archways lead the way between the common areas, and hardwood floors with inlaid borders add a classic touch. Other prewar touches include decorative moldings along the ceilings, baseboards, and windows.

The kitchen features an L-shaped breakfast bar that offers some separation from the living area. It also provides seating for up to two, creating the perfect spot to sip coffee or entertain. Plus, you could still fit a small dining table or desk in the living room in addition to a sofa or sectional. The tiled floor in the kitchen also sets it apart from the living room and matches the white-and-orange tile backsplash.

A king-sized bed can easily fit in the bedroom, which also has two windows and space for a dresser or armoire. Located right next to the bedroom, the bathroom is outfitted with white tile walls and a white, spacious vanity for a monochrome look. The shower/tub combo has a frosted sliding glass door.

In New York, what’s outside the unit can be just as important as what’s inside. This home is situated in a pet-friendly co-op building with an elevator, live-in super, newly renovated lobby, laundry room, additional storage, and bike room. Gifting and co-purchasing are allowed, and subletting after two years is considered. Location-wise, it’s just a block from neighborhood staples like Chelsea Market and the High Line, and a few blocks from Chelsea Piers. Endless art galleries and restaurants surround the building on neighboring streets, and the Joyce Theater is just around the corner. When you do need to leave the neighborhood, transit is convenient with the A, C, E, L, 1, 2, 3, F, and M trains all nearby.

…and why you might not

The kitchen looks slightly outdated in terms of its finishes, and doesn’t have much counter space outside the breakfast bar. There’s also no dishwasher and no central air conditioning. But if window units and washing dishes by hand aren’t dealbreakers for you, be sure to check out this rare Chelsea find!
