Despite the neighborhood’s average home prices, buying in the West Village doesn’t have to mean spending seven figures. The nabe has some hidden gems in older buildings, like 24 Cornelia St. #15. Formerly a part of the city’s historic tenement housing, buying in this building means you’ll essentially own a piece of NYC history. You’d also be rubbing elbows with a key part of pop culture history: the building is just across the street from Taylor Swift’s former townhouse, and the subject of her song “Cornelia Street.” Here’s everything you need to know about our Deal of the Week, a West Village studio apartment with a decorative fireplace and sleeping den.

The Price: $425,000
The median asking price for a home in the West Village was $1.9 million this October, according to the StreetEasy Data Dashboard. That means our Deal of the Week is priced below a quarter of the median asking price for the neighborhood!
Buyers who put down the 25% minimum down payment of $106,250 can expect to see monthly payments of $2,995. This includes a mortgage payment of $2,080 and a maintenance fee of $915. Monthly payments are also far below the median asking rent in the West Village, which sat at $5,250 in October.
Why You’ll Love It…
This unit has maintained much of its original charm, giving it an old-school vibe while providing some modern updates. For instance, the hardwood floors have recently been refinished, and the decorative fireplace has been painted white for a crisp look and feel. The living area has two large windows, plus some built-in storage that can be used in a myriad of ways.
Unlike most studios, buyers won’t necessarily have to put their bed in the living room here: there’s a separate area for sleeping, located on the opposite end of the kitchen from the living area. The sleeping area could instead be used as a den or home office, however, depending on your needs. You’ll also find a wall of unpainted exposed brick in this space.
The kitchen is large and open to the rest of the space, and features something a little unexpected: a vintage bathtub/shower combo with a curtain installed. It’s certainly a conversation starter, and an interesting focal point for the room! In addition to the tub, the kitchen features a full-size fridge and oven. And don’t worry, the unit does include a proper half bathroom with a toilet and sink.
Residents of this mid-rise building enjoy access to a common garden, private outdoor spaces, bicycle storage, and laundry facilities. Pied-à-terres, co-purchasing, and gifting are all permitted. The A, C, E, B, D, F, and M trains stop just down the street for easy commutes throughout the city. But the building is also nestled right in the middle of all that the Village has to offer, including eateries like Nami Nori, John’s of Bleecker Street, Buvette, and Little Owl, and venues like the Comedy Cellar and IFC Center. For those seeking outdoor space, Washington Square Park is just two blocks away.
…And Why You Might Not
Needless to say, the bathtub and shower in the kitchen will be a non-starter for some — and there isn’t much in the way of cabinetry in the kitchen, either. The unit is also three flights up a walk-up building, which won’t be for everyone. Additionally, you won’t find any traditional closets in the unit, meaning you’ll have to get creative with storage solutions.
Still, for the famed location and charming original details, it’ll be hard to beat this price point!
