1009 Fifth Avenue is a Beaux-Arts mansion built in 1899. The house sits on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street and has an unusual amount of light and windows.
It is 20,000 sq feet, 8 stories tall with double Mansard roofs. It has direct and forever protected views of the Metropolitan Museum and Central Park.
The lot is especially large with 27 feet of frontage on Fifth Ave, and 100 feet of frontage onto 82nd Street. It was constructed by developers W.W. and T.M. Hall & designed by architect Welch, Smith & Provot.
Shortly after the completion of the house in 1901, Benjamin N. Duke, Chairman of the American Tobacco Co. at that time purchased the house. The house remained in the extended Duke-Semans family for over 100 years until it sold in 2006.
