About

96 Schermerhorn is a 13-story, 105-unit coop building on the edge of Brooklyn Heights, bordering Downtown Brooklyn. It was built in 1928 by St. John’s College as its main building of the downtown campus. When the undergraduate school of St. John’s College moved to their Jamaica, Queens in 1955, this building became home to St. John’s Law School. In the early 1970’s, St. John’s consolidated all of its academics in Queens, and the building was boarded up and warehoused.

In the early 1970’s, St. John’s consolidated all of its academics in Queens, and the building was boarded up and warehoused. The building was purchased by a developer in 1981 and the school, containing classrooms, offices, gymnasium and cafeteria were converted to residential apartments. The third floor has the highest ceilings (14’), floors 4-11 have 12’ ceilings, and the others have 10’ ceilings. The building is full service, with multiple elevators, and a common roof deck. Many new condos and hotels have been built in the area, in part to the easy access to almost a dozen subway lines within five blocks, and a cab on Boerum Place will take you directly across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. Three blocks away is Trader Joe’s at Court and Atlantic, and at the end of Atlantic Ave is the entrance to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
