The history of The Ansonia is as rich as its design. Still known and referred to as the Ansonia Hotel, commissioned by William Earl Dodge Stokes, the building was designed to be the grandest residential hotel in Manhattan. Constructed between 1899 and 1904, it initially served as a luxurious hotel with apartments. Over time, The Ansonia transitioned to rental apartments in the mid-20th century and eventually became a condominium. In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, The Ansonia was designated a New York City Landmark in 1972.

The Ansonia stunning roof deck once housed chickens, ducks, and other animals. Today, current residents still enjoy the stunning roof deck, as well as other building amenities including a bicycle room, storage units, cold storage, and laundry facilities. The Ansonia employs a full-time door person and concierge, a live-in-superintendent, and an onsite residence manager. The Ansonia also offers a Parking Garage.

Throughout its history, The Ansonia has been home to numerous famous residents. Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, socialite and soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, legendary baseball player Babe Ruth, and jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman all lived in the building at various times. Actress and director Angelica Huston also spent part of her childhood in The Ansonia.
