About

The 1028 Fifth Avenue Street mansion (also known as the Jonathan Thorne House) is located on the Upper East Side between East 83rd Street and East 84th Street. Jonathan Thorne has amassed a sizable fortune in leather trade and has the top mansion architect at the time named C. P. H. Gilbert. Construction began in 1900 and Gilbert produced a striking five-story limestone Beaux-Arts showplace over a basement protected by a sidewalk moat. While the entrance was on East 84thStreet, Thorne retained the more impressive 1028 Fifth Avenue address.
