The Building

39 Fifth Avenue was one of the first luxury apartment houses built on Lower Fifth, and led the way for much of the historic architecture that comprises the Gold Coast, a stretch that goes from 13th Street south to the Washington Square arch. It was designed by Emery Roth (the maestro behind the Beresford and the San Remo on Central Park West) and built by the firm of Bing & Bing in 1922. The building has 17 stories, an exterior decorated with intricate terra cottas that mimic a loggia, and a vaulted lobby with distinctly Palladian overtones. The 58-unit building was converted to a cooperative in 1986.
