I started at a large financial services firm about a year ago (out of college). Alot of bonuses were cut and now bonuses in general are being eliminated by competitors who relied more on government bailouts. The problem is in order for these companys to survive, they need to retain talent. So because some companys can no longer pay huge bonuses, they are increasing salarys. I don't think this really counts as a raise, but even firms who are not restricted from paying bonuses are being forced to implement across the board raises in order to keep people from looking for work elsewhere especially as the economy bounces back.
steve, trust me we've been all over the wall street bonus scene.

Yes, and Steve has been 100% incorrect on it the entire time.
> Owners dream scenario.
Yeah, every owner I know about dreams of losing 100% of their investment in 6 months.
They call it a nightmare, though.

I don't know the history of this, how so?
just type steveF in the search box. You'll find some real gems. Guy was going "buy now" and "watch out for the stampede" 18 months ago.
