More empty stoerefronts?

I was walking down 3rd avenue (from 86th to 72nd) yesterday and I noticed what seemed to be even more empty store fronts than when I had last walked there ~1 month ago. Also, I saw no new stores/restaurants in places where there used to be emptiness. Am I mistaken, or have other people seen a worsening in places going out of business? what about your neck of the woods?
