If you have the time and ability to go get boxes from people who just completed their own moves, or businesses that receive boxes with their stock, you can check with Craig. Greeny-types often are happy to give away their used-once boxes.

Also probably freecycle or whatever that hippie site is called.

I freecycled all our moving boxes from the last move (and the bubble wrap inside and wrapping papers) on freecycle. Since we have a ton of stuff, I think we helped 4 separate parties out.

Do NOT go around picking up old boxes from the sidewalk that other people used from their moves. This is the quickest way to infest not only your stuff but your new space with bedbugs.

Flatrate movers offer a "greener" option of lightly pre-used boxes at a discount (for clients moving with them). I used these on my last move and it was a great little savings and made me feel less guilty than I did for all the cartons I wasted during my prior moves with them.

And I suspect movers offer crates for rent -- traditionally made of wood, but these days hard plastic. These are typically used for office moves, and have easy flip-fold tops. Maybe only available from movers that also do commercial.

Green boxes? Give me a break! Why don't you tree huggers get a life. Here is a hint: scientists have recently discovered the best way to protect the environment. It does not invovle "green" boxes or driving a Prius. According to them, the best way to save the environment is to not have kids.

Go into a Duane Reade or CVS and ask when they restock. You can arrange with the manager to pick them up before they toss it out to the street.

Ubottom - this is my worst nightmare. Where did this happen? I have heard tyhe carziest stuff about furniture - that even some high end mattress places actually use refurbished mattresses, that could have bedbugs, and that you could buy a new mattress, plastic sealed, and boom you are infested. And then how could you prove liability? Absolutely terrifying.

and actually i think it's a real shame what the bedbug situation is doing to the recycling movement. i am in the process of moving and would never be above used furniture, in fact i like myself a deal. but there is no way i am taking even the slightest chance. god i didn't even think about the boxes in this context..

BOMB BEFORE YOU MOVE IN. I'd rather live with bedbugs then live with cockroaches!

Here in Harlem we train our cockroaches to eat bedbugs. Never had a problem.
But sometimes we have a construction trades union rat outside.

bedbugs are everywhere. as are lice. they're our cockroaches and water beetles of the '80s, but they attach. (although i'm fairly certain lice have been prevelant for a good long time, the bedbug seems to be gaining genetic strength recently).

remediation if it happens. until it does, chill. take reasonable precautions, and know that it may still happen to you.

Moving boxes for a fraction of the price, they deliver them to you for free and you make your move a little greener. I found this 'place' by accident when I started searching for moving boxes after seeing the outrageous prices that U-Haul was charging. I have always been a box scrounger when moving and it has always sucked. You never have enough and they're all weird sizes which makes packing the truck like playing Jenga. Sick of it, I decided to buy boxes which makes me feel dirty for using them once and tossing them. Anyhow, this place sells used boxes that they gather from many retail, misprint and overrun sources and sell them for a fraction of the price of anywhere else. Then they will deliver them to you for FREE. I got 69 boxes, 6 rolls of tape, a tape dispenser, 150 sheets of packing paper, 2 sharpies and 2 box openers for $75 and they were here in 4 hours. I still feel lousy for tossing the boxes but a lot ...%u200E More
