Lack of a foyer is acceptable in apartments under $300K. But for half a million and up, I want a grown-up apartment, with a formal space for receiving guests. I've been out of my "dorm room" phase for 20 years now.

I think it depends on the size of the apartment. If it is a 1 bedroom or a studio, then entering into the living room is fine. For a 2 bedroom or larger, I would think that you would want a coat closet and that would likely be in the entrance foyer. We saw a 2 bedroom apartment which entered into the dining room area and it really looked odd.

I think it also needs to be in context of the age and size of the apartment: almost all postwar 1 br's enter pretty much directly into the livingroom, so that isn't a negative. but if it's in a prewar classic 6, it's amuch different issue.

Thanks. That is my reaction as well. Saw a couple of apartments recently (2 or 3BR) that are reasonably nice but open up into a big empty space. It feels a bit awkward, but it's hard to know for sure unless you're actually living there. Have wondered how it might work.

We have a 5 * 9 foyer, and while it is not huge, it is nice for plunking down shoes, hanging coats, storing strollers, etc.
