Discussion about
There are always many manhattan apartments listed as vacation, day-by-day rentals, etc. on craigslist, with agencies and on vacation rental websites. I don't know if there are buildings where this is legal or if it's just overlooked. I would like to buy (or rent) a place and use it as a pied-a-terre and rent it out for as much of the time that I'm not using it as possible. Does anyone know any buildings that are amenable to this?

Our friends from Denver used to stay in one on the East Side - midtown. They got friendly with the manager who told them which apartments had been renovated, so they always had a really nice suite.

It is a condo, but owners can rent out for short term (even weekend). I will try to find the name. (But it was pretty expensive).

The city is cracking down on this because these units are not hostelries & do not pay the taxes which the hotels pay so proceed at your own risk.

I thought that as long as you paid taxes for the rentals it was ok...I guess it's not. The city should find ways of letting people rent out temporary their places if there are no rental restrictions in the building. In every big city of the world rentals are a big plus for tourists. They are cheaper than hotels, and they can cook and feel more comfortable. It is also a way for owners to make extra taxable income. Where could a group of college students from overseas stay in NYC that is affordable for them? Hotel prices are insane. If we want the vibrancy that diversity brings, we need to find ways for it to happen. Otherwise, NYC will turn into a luxury mall.

amazon, co-ops, condos, and landlords don't want their owners/tenants renting out space short-term. How people finagle it, I don't know, but they sure didn't know before renting/buying that they'd be able to do it.

Maybe if you follow through on some of the ads, and try to get addresses, you can figure out some likely buildings.

Last time I rented in a brownstone, where owners live in half of it and rents the other half to tourists. Does anybody know if this is legal?
