Don't know where you were, but you obviously mnissed great swaths of the borought - single family homes, apartment buildings, what the hell are you talking about?

Have you ever driven in upper Manhattan?

In my experience highways in Guatemala are much better than the FDR drive.

I heave heard from many sources that Queens is the most ethnically diverse place ON THE PLANET. So it can't be all that surprising that people live there. (confesion: I grew up in Queens). One interesting thing to see is driving down Roosevelt Ave you have each 10 blocks or so being a different country (well, actually controlled by a gang from a different country).

With almost all the good, cheap, ethnic restaurants being priced out of Manhattan, and the new interesting Brooklyn spots emulating manhattan, the best cheap, good eats is definitively in Queens now.

Yes, the areas right near JFK airport are not nice, but to generalize the entire borough based on a few side streets is just stupid and ignorant.

Queens has several great neighborhoods, Douglaston, Forest Hills, Jamaica Estates. Each for very different reasons.

The houses around Heathrow are pretty depressing as well, though prettier than those around JFK.

I don't know why you even post anymore, LICC, when you lose every argument you try to engage in.

Here's to the Newtown Creek!

Because they always put airports right smack in the most beautiful areas?

wonderbra, you're losing your tiresome touch. You're supposed to have claimed to take a private helicopter to your private jet in your private airport in your private little world that nobody else understands because they can't see it. Yeah, yeah, I know:

alanhart - far be it from me to defend wonderboy (I mean, what is the world coming to?), but I actually think that in this one rare instance he was trying to poke fun at the original poster's boorish attitude rather than express his own boorish attitude. That said, it's often hard to read sarcasm in message board posts, so I admit that it is entirely possible (esp. given who we're dealing with here) that wb's post was genuine boorishness rather than a hyperbolic send-up of the OP.

Ask ANYONE who lives in queens if they love it. Amswer=YES
Ask ANYONE who lives in queens if they would move. Answer=NO

Now I can't figure out why this is b/c Queens is clearly the ugliest of the 5 children but, be that as it may, they all love it.
It's got to be the people.

No boro is perfect and Queens has its problem areas, but there's a lot of great stuff there, too. And some neighborhoods are stunningly beautiful (Forest Hills Gardens or is it Forest Hills Estates, for example is one park like street after another of tudors and wonderful 1910s and 1920s architecture). It is the most diverse county in the U.S. with more languages spoken there than anywhere else. It is, in essense, today's version of the Lower East Side of my grandparents' generation.

You can't compare the entire boro to Bklyn in any meaningful way. Wide swaths of Bklyn are about as ugly and gritty and decaying as anything NY has to offer. It is also, as a borough, far more crime ridden. There's the Heights, and Cobble Hill, and the other hoods that are easy to list, but there are huge tracts that you would be terrified to walk alone in after dark. The Bronx also has its gems and its dumps. Nor is Manh. immune from blight and the uglies.

so what was the point of this thread again? That because Newtown Creek (which is shared with Bklyn, incidentally) is gross, Douglaston is a bad place to live? Huh?

my dentist, my grandmother, 3X girlfriends, my favorite diner, your brain surgeon........intersting the professions you picked to color the population of Queens that I might add, has the greatest diversification of ethnicity per sq/ft of anywhere on the planet. It's always the muts that are the healtiest. Where else can a kid go into a butcher and say, "Mister, can I pet the bunnys in the window".

"3X girlfriends" ... it doesn't sound any less dirty this way than it does when you spell it out.

I'll venture to guess that the "brain surgeon" does not live in an "ugly" apartment on the side streets by JFK that jjohnson is objecting to.

Oh and I forgot to mention, I was driving my new boyfriend's Rolls-Royce convertible. It was absolutely dreadful. Had I known that that silly silly navigation system would route me through bad neighborhoods (this is the 2nd time this has happened , I was in a Porsche last time) I would have driven a more inconspicuous car ( the Mercedes) so I could blend in easier with the poors.

Seriously, it was soo ugly! Yucky. And these crazy bog commie blocks...it looked so scary! Like it was going to swallow me and my car alive! How miserable... how could someone live in such squalor? And I went through some side street and passed this basketball court and everyone was staring at me and my car!!

I need to send Bloomberg a message and tell him to level that urban blight! Catastrophe.

Ewww and it felt like I was driving through Sudan or something with those rocky roads! Even the brand new Rolls couldn't mask those horrendous road bumps!!

What a mess.
