listing rent price "net" of free months?

Is it market convention to list a rental price net of the free months offered? Thus, for example if a LL is offering an apt. for $2,000 with 2 months free rent, would you expect the rent to be listed as $1,667 on this site or $2,000 with 2 months free mentioned in the text. Wondering. Just wasted my time with a place because they throught the former...

why would you want to live some place that uses smoke and mirrors?

as with everything else (no sales tax listed on purchases, one-way price based on round-trip airfare, etc.), they will probably list the lowest price they can legally get away with!

it is actually pretty common for landlords to list the net effective rent and still call it "with two months free!" and then in small print say that that the price reflects net rent!

i guess the lesson is read the fine print...

Was wondering how common it was--thanks. Will ask up front from now on--the place in question was only interesting without the gimmick, so I walked, but blew a lunch break visiting the building. Live & learn...
