Discussion about
Guys, I am looking to rent a nice loft space for a new years eve party for 20+ people in chelsea/Soho/tribeca/GVillage/EVillage/WVillage area. Any ideas on how to go about it. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd just stay home and take an Ambien at 10pm instead. Easier. More fun.

If you're planning on having it catered, ask the catering company. They have those connections.

I'm sorry but my memory bank is overloaded with the ghosts of New Years' Eves past, trudging for blocks and blocks in some skimpy creation and stilleto heels (not that I'd be likely to wear either today) FREEZING my ass off because you can never get a cab. All to go to some club that has jacked the prices from the ridiculous to the "are you f'ing kidding me", is too crowded to move and the line for the ladies room is longer than the one for tickets for Springsteen pre Internet. And of course the evening never lives up to its billing...No for the past 10 years or so I've had my own wonderful ritual and it doesn't involve leaving my sofa except to feed man and beast.

we're actually venturing out of the cave this year. it's been years since we've gone anywhere except occasionally a friend's place, or hosted a small gathering ourselves. but this past weekend i was taking a look on open table and one of the best restaurants down here (and one i have somehow never managed to get to) still had tables for a 9:30 seating. wish us luck! i'm half expecting it to be awful, but it's within walking distance, so with managed expectations maybe it will be OK.

iamlooking, there used to be a great book that listed party spaces. a friend of mine found her wedding reception loft in chelsea that way (and it wasn't that expensive). i don't know if it's been updated, but maybe someone at the Barnes & Noble information desk might know of it, if you happen to be near one.

20 people, why do you need a loft?

If its something that only fits 20-25 people, its not a loft.

"Any ideas on how to go about it."

Put a post on SE, see if anyone says "I have an amazing loft in XXX. What is your budget?"

"If its something that only fits 20-25 people, its not a loft."

I've had parties of 20+ people in both a "regular" place and a loft. Trust me, it's a lot more comfortable in a loft.

I will throw this out there only because someone who I work with just mentioned that there is a very nice private party space above Bowlmor Lanes - 5th Ave & 13th I think? Can't tell you how many it would accomodate, but you could call and inquire. This may not qualify as a loft but you never know.

I had a party (150+ people) with a couple of friends in a huge loft many years ago. Everyone wound up sort of stuck along the walls because the space was too vast to encourage mingling.

If we had been shooting for a conceptual art experience, the party would have been a huge success (well actually it was anyway, but that's besides the point) ... for me, though, it was a learning experience.

Heed somewhereelse's warning if you like mingly parties.

I think the Soho Grand Hotel might have a space that fits what you are looking for, but that could be a longshot given timing. Worth taking a look, though, if you haven't already.

don't know whre I saw this, but suppodely Mike Bloomberg said it's much better to have a space too small than one that's too large.
Totally agree - gave a small going away party for 20 people, and they were alll clustered in one small space in our apt. would have been better to have 50 people.

If you have a loft but only 20 friends, the you should be posting to SE: "Friends for New Year's Party. I am having a New Year's party at my loft but only have 20 friends, so I need 30 more to fill out the space."

yes inonada - just all migrate someplace as 20 will become 14. you'll be overwhelmed in a loft unless you can find 180 more.
