Discussion about
Folks, Time is running for me to get my significant other a Christmas present. So I thought I'd solicit some suggestions from the clever folks who contribute to the SE message boards. 40-something gentlemen, what's on your Christmas wish list? All others: What are you getting for the 40-something gentlemen in your lives? Thanks!

a little more info would help!!!

Buy two tickets to somewhere he'd like to go, insert them in a coffee-table book about that place.

elvis coffee mugs. electric guitar. europe-compatible GPS (that was really for me, so i don't have to try to communicate with the guy at the gas station in nice despite the fact that the hubby speaks french and i don't, kind of like the bowling ball inscribed with homer). speaking of, for the right guy a bowling ball and a vintage bowling shirt speaks volumes, bowling shoes and bag would just be the icing on the cake. the boxed led zeppelin set. the brookstone weather clock, so he can bore me with weather-related conversation with ease. an i-dock speaker for his office. beer pint glasses from different microbreweries.

a couple of years ago i got him a framed and autographed photo of the four orioles pitches who won however many games. he's a fan, obviously.

Thanks for the ideas people! All of them great for the average guy, but the guy in question is not interested in clothes, cooking, watches, cologne or beer. He likes electronics, planes, skiing, boats, baseball. Sorry, I should have made that clear in the original post.

A weather clock is a fine suggestion. Maybe tickets for another ski trip as a variation of LoftyDreams' suggestion. But we already have a ski trip planned, so that would not be a particularly exciting gift.

P.S. AR - a GPS was last year's Xmas present.

Fine. Buy him a plane, a boat, or a baseball team.

Altimeter watch for skiing can track # of verticle feet travelled during the day and other cool guy stuff. It combines electronic-gadget-skiing into one.

Luggage for travel. Filson makes some really nice macho bags including one duffel-like bag with wheels. www.filson.com or Paragon Sports.

If into digital photography, there are GPS devices you attach to some cameras (Nikon, e.g.) that imprint a geo-tag when you snap a pic and later upon playback, certain programs like iPhoto will show where in the world you were when a photo was taken.

Summer outing into the NY Harbor on one of the sail boats that ply the waters can be a fun break during summer and romantic. While a little goofy, the Titanic Exhibit at Discovery Center in Times Square is fun little outing also (more of a stocking stuffer than big gift).

Day of heli-skiing while away if you want to break the bank a bit.

OnTheMove, at least you have some idea what to get for your 40-something guy. You're way ahead of me. I see that you have baseball on your list- what about a signed baseball jersey/baseball or tickets for opening day for his favorite team?

Thank you all! I took your suggestions to heart and ended up buying:

- an altimeter watch (thanks kylewest)
- a digital camera GPS device (thanks again kylewest)
- a weather clock (thanks AR)

If I have time I'll stop by the MOMA store for stocking stuffers (thanks somewhereelse).

lobster: He gets to see his team (Yankees) several times a season and has dibs on almost any game thanks to a generous relative with season tickets.

kylewest: The heli-skiing will have to wait until I figure out whether or not I am getting a bonus this year and/or a raise the coming year!

NYCMatt, I'll take any year Rose Gold Rolex. Why 1967?? I'm a sucker for rose gold, which strangely was my grandmother's name.

OnTheMove, that's so interesting that you also liked Kyle's idea of a digital camera GPS device. My husband is an amateur photographer and I thought that was a wonderful gift idea.

i've added the altimeter to the list for next year. although i'm still very pleased with the elvis coffee mugs purchase. i don't think i could love a man who couldn't appreciate a nice set of diner elvis coffee mugs.

I see some watch fans out here. I am one myself, but would never go for a Rolex (the rose gold part is negotiable). To me Rolex (and Breitling) is like a black BMW -- very cliche. Prefere Jaeger Lecoultre, Girard Perregaux, Chopard. Glaschutte makes some excellent pieces, but i somehow cannot get over the fact that it is not Swiss.

For the ladies out there who have some disposable income and macho boyfriends, try Hublot -- awesome watches, but will set you back 6 months' worth of rent.

as to the 'theme' coffee mugs, I classify them right with foto-imprinted shirts, singing bass, etc. -- white trashy.

my suggestion for a simpe gift for a guy with guy's tastes would be Rocabar by Hermes -- very guy scent, very high end and classy.

Slingbox was my most recent electronic purchase for hubby (for father's day i think). Good for TV lovers. Specifically, I purchased it so he could watch football games that weren't nationally televised.

This year I'm LOST (or lacking time and energy to Christmas shop). What to get for a workaholic?
