I've come close to deciding to renew my lease but i already gave out the holiday tips which were much lower than if I would have renewed...should I go back and add additional money or just let it go.

This is just life with SE - we have a truly invaluable poster (30 Years), another with vast knowledge of certain neighborhoods and procedures (Kyle), a few hawking their services (Ali, Noah, Burkhart) but I don't mind as they are always upfront with their intentions and they do add value with their comments, a few like Kevin who add genuine unique insight and perspective that I would never learn elsewhere ...... and then a bunch of losers with absolutely no lives who stalk this board 24/7 like Matt and HFS and that weirdo who used to always talk about Chicago. Its just part of the SE deal - if you want the free gems from 30 Years and Kyle, you gotta be prepared to wade through the bullshit from the masses.

Streeteasy, simply do this...When you choose 'ignore' eliminate the gray 'ignoring comment by' thingees. Set it up so you can truly ignore.

I don't think this is Riversider but why doesn't Riversider ever say it's not? It's obviously Newman though. Obviously hfs just wants to be loved and accepted. Apparently he was royally screwed up as a kid and has not the slightest idea how to be loved and accepted in any kind of normal fashion. His views of reality are permanently f*cked and his coping mechanism is to be a sociopath. For some reason, he thinks what he is doing here will either protect him from getting hurt or actually help him gain acceptence, in a cyber-social situation. this is to the enormous disadvantage of everyone else on the board. the think that really freaks me out is that hfs has never uttered a word about real estate, and this is a board for real estate junkies. i guess he wants us all to tell him he is loved and accepted and all is well with the world?

Darkbird, the ignore button is fine but his comments still damage the quality of the board. If I am someone new and I see his posts, I´ll tend to think that is not as good as it really is. Though I totally agree with glamma´s diagnose, I think there is an anti-SE agenda.

I picture a big, brassy upper middle-aged (or "of a certain age") woman. Woman, not lady, not girl, not broad, not gal, woman. As in "woman's sizes". With clown-dyed hair in a "hairdo". With big gaudy gold-tone jewelry (brooches and the like) on a big gaudy novelty-colored dress suit or pants suit or the like. And vaudeville makeup to match, of course. Lives in a scared-white-woman neighborhood like Yorkville or one of those beige areas on the eastern side of midtown.

There have been other posters I've found to be pretty obnoxious and anti-Streeteasy, but I think banning them would ultimately prove fruitless (indeed some of them just change screen names). Let's just ignore and move on - I think those among us who truly see (and receive) value from this board will keep coming back and ensure its survival, while those with less honorable goals will eventually tire (even if the stamina of hfs, rufus, mutombo, et al is impressive at times).

Isn't it interesting how we 'know' the gender of a poster? I often get the idea of someone's gender but, of course, there's a 50% chance that I'm wrong.

Alanhart, HFS's (which has always made me think of "hissyfit" for some reason) response to a post I made on another thread makes me agree with you - and that is a great image! Personally, my spouse would be furious if I spent my days cyberstalking people instead of holding down a job.

The difference is that mimi discusses real estate on many other threads - plus, Spinnaker also started a thread begging Streetasy to pull HFStalkerCon's handle that same day. When has HFStalkerCon ever had ANYTHING to say about real estate? All she does is stalk AboutReady and Columbiacounty. That's it. No one has a problem with disagreement - even SteveF and PeterFitz, though idiots, mostly talk about real estate before the conversation descends into name calling. It's the stalking and intentional disruption of the board that's a problem.

The way to deal with this problem is not to "ignore" posters who are causing problems on the board. Streeteasy needs to have trusted moderators who can hide/remove comments immediately from the general public and other users. A self-policing community is really the only way to deal with this unless you have a board where every comment must be approved which of course would suck.

Streeteasy knows this, and the only reason such a policy has not been instituted yet is because they either are too busy or do not care about this issue.

I agree though that it definitely is a turn-off for new people who check out the site and are considering posting here. The threads on this board often descend into personal attacks within 30 comments which really limits the discussion. To do my part, I will try to refrain from calling people morons or idiots just because in my opinion (which could be wrong) they are scared of minorities and people who are not rich.

SE does seem to monitor what goes on, or at least responds to a request to kill a thread if it's deemed to cross a line. What that line is, is up to SE. Witness the thread that went away yesterday.

Honestly, it's a bit arrogant for anyone to presume being justified in banning another poster, unless you work for Streeteasy. I get hfscomm's shtick - yes, it's grating, but it's meant to be so. He/she/it is poking holes in other posters' occasional holier-than-thou attitudes on here. I happen to find many of w67th's posts unhelpful, illegible, and occasionally toxic, but have no desire to ban him because of that. Others seem to find him hilarious. I get that newer board members might be put off by the thread hijacking, but this happens often enough regardless, and it's clear hfs isn't purely a spammer anyway - those of you who think so might want to think twice about what he/she does that's really bothering you. Let it be.
