"in contract"

While following the status of coops and condos in building I am interested in, I am impressed at the length of time units are "in contract". I was wondering, if you are currently "in contract" - how long has it been? How much longer till closing? If you were able to, would you "back out" of the deal?

I was in contract for a coop. Normal closing time is between 2-3 months in the city.
