Discussion about
I'm curious to find out how much storage units costs on average in new development buildings. I'm being quoted around $30-$35K which seems like it's on the very high end. I'm skeptical that they actually justify their value when purchased from the developer. Any comps in Chelsea and Flatiron would be helpful.

Well, best way is to compare rental storage. In my 'luxury' rental, it is $125/mo for a 5 by 5 space. At Chelsea Mini, it was about $170 for a larger 8 by 8. Depending on size of unit, $25k may make more sense.

I paid a flat $700 for a cage in what was a large common storage area. No ongoing charges.

What does $30K work out to in your building, on a price per square foot basis, in uninhabitable space? Seriously, I'd like to know, so please post.

I have been thinking about buying a storage unit as well (in a Chelsea building-maybe the same one). I have decided it's more prudent to throw away stuff than spend 30 grand.

flatironj: Don't throw good stuff away. Donate it to a charity thriftshop (I donate to Cancer Care, on Third Ave., ask for Cathy). Get a tax write-off.
