Discussion about
Hi guys. I am possibly going to be buying a coop in the Paul Revere coop in Astoria. They want me to get 3 personal and 3 business references. I was just wondering if a family member would be considered acceptable for a personal reference. Thanks in advance for any help.

Only if they have a lot of money.

I would think that is not acceptable. We are going through the process and asking a family member wasn't even on the radar.

Thanks Khd. I think I will just get all the references from the people I work with.

When having someone do a peronal reference should they address it to the name of the coop board or just to whom it may concern???

I don't know if it is unacceptable, but getting a reference from a family member is a little weird. Would make me think, "Doesn't he know even 3 people socially who could have written this for him?" The fact that a brother, mother, uncle likes you would have no positive impact on me were I on the admissions committee.

Remember, you aren't looking for a date. You want to come across as a solvent, mild-mannered, responsible, slightly boring, very dependable guy. Don't do ANYTHING in your application that stands out as odd. If you have to ask yourself if you should include something, the answer is likely "no."

True, Kyle. Address it to the the Board. They may get insulted if they think it's a form letter.

Agree, address it to the board, but it can be care of the management company. Letters on letterhead also look better, at least that is what my broker told me.
