Anybody out there have good recs for an interior designer? I would say I'm looking for a classic aesthetic, streamlined, little modern & mid-century, design for comfort and practicality...

Reno09- I can reccomend Design by Francois, LLC.

www.francoistenenbaum.com

Has done both classic (french- typcially UES - 2 townhouses, and several apts including on UWS) styles and modern (penthouse loft in Tribeca, 2 midtown penthouses, house in presitgious LI neighborhood).

Go to Cherie Zucker at www.cheriezuckerinc.com.

She's amazing. She has great taste, great ideas, and really works hard to make sure her clients are happy. And she has a wonderful demeanor! Professional, but super-friendly.

Try AT Interior Designs, www.annietse.net. Annie listens and will work with you to create a great look. She's terrific! Her design aesthetics are modern comfort. She also gives you options for a design plan for skeptics.

what is a typical budget (or range) for these types of designers say for a typical one-bedroom (800 sqft)manhattan apartment? (something suitable for a 30-something single male in corporate law). How much would I need to spend in total?

The one I used is charging $100 per room (kitchen $400) but she tells you where and what to buy, so there's no surcharge or mark-up. You also get the sketches that to someone like me came extremely useful.

That depends on the amount of DIY you are wiliing to put in. "wasted time is saved money". 750 to 2000 a drawing depending on the amount of specs included. In this econimic environment you might be lucky to find a good designer willing to negotiate something in between that will work for you. just make sure you like the designers style and mentality whatever the cost is.
