Discussion about 1049 Fifth Avenue #PH1
This is Rush Limbaugh's apartment. He paid about $5M in 1994. Then there was the money poured into the harlot's-dream decorating....

I've seen worse decorating. It's kinda foo-fee for a dude. Nice layout. I have neither 5 nor 14 million $ so makes no difference to me how much they want for it.

Yes, misguided murals and too-glossy wood are easy to fix.

Google Books has stories from 1991, when it was converted from a hotel. Nicely-done, with thickened floor slabs, 5-pipe HVAC, and so on. The developer was a real character.

This building has the misfortune to be next to the sale challenged 1055 Park Avenue. What a mess @ 1055. The sidewalks around the site have finally been returned to the public.

IMO, saying this decorating is gay is an insult to gay people, lol! Gay people gave waaaay better taste. To me, it's gauche & overdone, it's decorating for someone who has no taste. Looks like an overly aubussoned & muraled version of Donald Trump's apt, only he does it with brass & mirrors. This place will needs lotsa paint & wall paper/fabric remover.

OMG If that says "gay" it says "Liberace on a bad day gay". True there is nothing masculine about it and I would LOVE nothing better than for Rush to be outed ala Larry Craig (not that I like the idea of violating privacy but I hold hypocritical haters to another standard). But I suspect this mess is less the sign of crack in the closet door and more of having no taste and throwing massive amounts of money at a decorator with a "do what you want, I'm only there a few days a year anyway" attitude. Hence what you have is a decorator's (and probably female) fantasy, not Rush's.

Wouldn't be an awesome story if Russ were gay??? Like the ending of "Bruno"....what could the haters say then?

On the other hand I honestly would love to have that bathroom.

Ok. First, Rush is not gay. I looked in the most-recent Gay Directory and he isn't in there. It is the same book i look in when friends ask, "Oh, Kyle, is _____ gay?"

Second. This is not gay decorating. It is text book straight castrastrophe. It is what happens when a straight person who doesn't come from money, and who hasn't had any sense of aesthetics imparted to him, suddently comes into A LOT of money. It is like the corner grocer winning the lottery. The result is not cheap ugly. It is expensive ugly. Gaudy. A tacky person's vision of how a rich people's homes look.

See Madoff's apartment for another example of a guy and his wife with no taste adopting this style. Trump is a bit of a twist on this because he didn't grow up poor--his family had money. But likely no one had any taste--Queens was never exactly a hotbed of trend-setting for Architectural Digest (now, don't jump all over me--I know all about how nice Forest Hills Gardens is, etc.). His Trump Tower apartment is every bit as grotesque and hideous as Rush's place.

Kyle, do you use the old school printed Gay Directory or the online version?

Seriously, your critique is perfect and should be placed as a caveat em prompter along side the broker listing (fat chance of that).

Um ... wow.

Very "girly".

In his defense, maybe it was his wife's decorating. I've never been a fan of the over-the-top Baroque formal. I feel like I'd need to be in a tux all the time just to sit in my dining room.

My tastes run more to the more masculine Craftsman and Mission ... with a nice mix of Midcentury Modern.

Maybe it was much simpler than all this. Just an over-educated, under qualified, UWS middle-aged, ultra liberal, angry interior decorator, just purposely, completely screwing an ultra conservative asshole. She wins, game-set-match.

Thanks maly :)

This is what people, who have no concept of good taste, think is klassy. It's very middle America, something from the hinterlands, like Omaha Ramada Inn, which is rather surprising considering this is 5th Ave.

It's amusing & appalling: $14MM to buy a gut renovation. Wonder if Stain Kill will actually cover the murals.

The sad thing is the cost of this "decor" probably would buy a whole chain of Econo-Lodges.

Actually the thing about this apartment is that it probably would have Rush's fan base, the McMansion set on "House Hunters" would probably drool over it.

Something I don't understand: The "Winged Victory" statue is in the dinning room. So, why isn't the Mona Lisa hanging above the fireplace in the living room instead of the Pier 1 prints?

The layout is fab. As for the murals, one could just paint over the palm trees and blue skies. The woodwork is just unfortunately finished in a high-gloss yellow color, but is probably high-quality oak, so easy enough to go matte in a better tone. The decorating probably subtracts a million or two from this place. I don't know much about 1055 Park's current situation, but I imagine this PH is a real PH and floats over it all.

You can't just look at this place and say this or that about the decor.
I decided to visit the place and see it for myself through the eyes of Rush.
First I crushed up about 6 Oxycotons and snorted them rapidly.
Then I ate an Aptivia Yogurt with 4 Percosets and 3 Darvons crushed up and mixed in.
I smoothed the edges of my head with 3 Xanex and quickly drank 3 Red Bulls.
With my Limbaugh Goggles firmly in place I entered the open house.
It looks a lot bigger in the floor plan b/c once your in the house their are some full size pink elephants and I didn't even attempt to count the gremlins. The murals are infinitely different under the influence of so many psycho tropics and their mysterious drug-drug interactions. As far as I was concerned there was one bedroom that is accessible from the apartment but is located in the tropics!
You can't see it in the photos but. all the corners and edges have been rounded and padded. This is a great feature when stumbling from room to room and periodically falling over and hitting you head on the furniture. If i could afford it I'd buy it in a NY minute. If I had the kind of money it tales I'd also have the money to irradiate all the little trolls living under the bed and in the closets. Looks like I'll have to write again later. The Betty Ford only let's me on the internet 15 minutes at a time.

On the other hand, he could have left something in the medicine chest. (Actually shouldn't Rush be at the new place on West Side that gives you a special "drug safe").
