Discussion about
There is now a thread or whatever they call it on Facebook, "I Bet The Yankees Can Have 100,000 Fans Before The Red Sox Do". This important...Season starts Sunday and we deal with the evil ones right out of the box. Its on..
I don't know, or care about baseball.
Does this group serve tasty snacks and refreshing beverages? Any good tunes? If, so -- count me in!
Thanks liz, for alerting me. Unfortunately, I root for the opposition...
Sorry Truth no yummies or free alcohol. We do it for the love of the game. Tunes, well it depends on your opinion of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame"...
Given that your NYC cred it pretty solid I'm rather surprised you don't share a love for our national pastime and municipal mania. Too many years hanging out with Brits and Canadians I guess (apologies to our friends in the community of the Canadian persuasion, your kids will come home in Yankee regalia soon enough).
However, given that rock and roll is as necessary for human survival as baseball (in order words totally essential) we'll give you a pass.
BTW, I was finally able to recover my music files and my "New York Songs" playlist. Believe it or not we missed a few.
Liz, I also root for the opposition. Swing the other way, so to speak. So no Facebook for me. Go Sox
I am also of the Canadian persuasion...and yes, my NY born son has already gone over to the dark (Yankees) side, including regalia.
sidelinesitter, how could you let that happen? (It's secretly a great fear of mine if/when I have children someday). Hopefully, he'll see the light when he's a bit older :)
It just happened. One day he liked baseball but had no idea of teams and the next day he was a Yankee fan. This was last year and by the end of the season it only got worse - World Series and all. I don't see much hope of rehabilitation. Sad, really, to see one's child condemned to life as a Yankee fan. And so young. Tragic
sideline, I feel for you. Hopefully, it's a phase, or at least something we'll just have to learn from ourselves.
Truly sad story sideline...i was born a masshole(only lived there for 10yrs) but it was long enough to make me a die hard sawx fan..funny that i've lived in nyc twice as long but switching from one to the other is inconceivable..i'm afraid your stuck with a yankee fan(your son) for life....YIKES
moxie, your input on this board has always been great, but that puts you over the top. Makes me proud. By the way, this thread does not bode well for this supposed bet going on on Facebook.
Oh I think its like some of our political debates (on SE and throughout the country) a vocal minority drowning out the vast majority. Rush Limbaugh AND Curt Schilling can both move out of the country!
i always knew you were a smart person bjw
Hey liz, I think you're great (and I do love your contributions here as well), but you did start this thread! And to compare us to Limbaugh - shameless!
I know I started it and frankly I'm appalled that my side hasn't been more vocal...I know you are out there. And I didn't compare you directly to Limbaugh I just said that Curt Schilling could join him in his voluntary exile (hopefully leaving behind a residence of slightly better taste even with a ketchup stained sock picked in whatever they had Lenin in for 80 years and encased in gold). However, if the shoe fits, you are welcome to wear it.
See you Sunday night.. Maybe in October. Not in November.
Re: the sock thing, I have to say that I never understood why Schilling went out and played injured like that. Totally unnecessary to play hurt in a world of HGH and steroids. I'm sure that if he had asked nicely, Clemens or A-Rod or Pettitte could have hooked him up no problem.
Oh no, he di'nt. Tell me he did not go there. The gloves are off now.
And IF Clemens gets into the Hall of Fame what cap do you think he'll wear? BTW, you don't think there may be any correlation between Big Papi's recent fall off in production and the word test would you?
"And IF Clemens gets into the Hall of Fame"
are you high?....are you sharing arod's meds?...
and if Barry Bonds gets into the hall of fame...
Love your Yankess all you want i don't besmirch you a bit, but please show some baseball acumen.
Bonds, Clemens, ARod and several other marked by this whole "steroids era" are locks for the Hall.
Petite is the only "home boy" they have accused with any degree of credibility (and yes he's self-admittedly guilty) but he was led in by his mentor and idol, who, to reiterate, spent most of his career with the Red Sox. Yes, my mother also told me "If Margo jumped off the Brooklyn bridge, would that mean you have to jump off?" as a parable that one needn't be led by others but the power of a professional mentor in setting ones moral compass in the workplace is very significant.
All our other born Yankees (Jeter, Posada, Rivera etc) have been above reproach throughout the steroid era.
Moxie...I agree that all of the players you mentioned (along with McGwire and possibly Sosa) are HOF players. Bonds and Clemens had first ballot induction sewed up before they ever saw a steroid, ARod would have probably gone in that direction as well. But the jury is still out on how the BWAA will treat the steroid era and if and when any of them will make it to Cooperstown and with what compromises. The important thing is to me that if one makes it, the rest should be judged on their baseball merits alone and steroids become a non-issue. Of course Bonds, Clemens, et al are Hall of Famers.
Question my morality, my patriotism, my kindness to the fortunate, but please don't question my baseball acumen--that hurts.
BTW, when the steroid issue is solved as far as Cooperstown is concerned, next step is to finally induct Shoeless Joe Jackson, and yes, Pete Rose (the latter I still might exclude not for gambling but for being an overall ahole and god awful taste in clothes).
I think the criteria will be pretty simple.."would this guy have been in the hall w/o ped's?"
McGwire-no
Sosa-no
Clemens-yes
Bonds-yes
As for Joe Jackson and Pete Rose they obviously both belong. Last i checked its not a good citizen hall of fame. You know that Babe Ruth lived a life that makes Pete Rose look like a saint. Those wide collars from the 70s definitely keep him out of the Fashion Hall of Fame
I know baseball and football are very different entities and Cooperstown is sacred ground while Canton is merely hallowed (actually if you have ever been to Canton, OH and I have for reasons other than the football HOF) but I believe that contained within the football edifice is still enshrinement of one Orenthal James Simpson. Some might claim that double homicide is just a tad worse than drinking, gambling, "wenching" or whatever Babe Ruth was guilty of. In fact it could even be a worse crime than steroids...but that's football.
liz, it's true your "side" has been surprisingly absent, which is usually not the case. As for your talk of Clemens and steroids and the Red Sox, that's pretty much baloney. It's fairly obvious that he only started using after leaving Boston. Regardless, the guy is classless and I couldn't care less which cap he chooses for the Hall. And insinuating Ortiz' success was due to PEDs isn't based on much fact. He's well past the prime hitting age of 27, not to mention he was hampered by a badly damaged wrist for the past season and a half. Doesn't behoove you to be so careless with the "facts."
Okay, okay -- I will join that group. But, you have to do it for me -- I don't Facebook.
I'm not a Facebook fan either but I needed to join for professional reasons and someone sent me this link knowing full well I'd go at it like the title of a Meat Loaf album featuring my favorite Yankee of all time. I think you have to be on Facebook to join a group--I'm still learning that culture and not at all sure I want to.
Thanks for the support though!!!!
not a baseball fan
I thought I was the last kid on my block not to facebook, Truth. We're like identical cousins.
love the games btwn red sox v. yanks, will most likely watch Sun night if time allows, enjoy some of MLB but can hardly get this involved/emotional with a bunch of overpaid mostly eejits. and let's not all be shocked, shocked in a few yrs when whatver designer drug they are all taking gets banned.
Which one is Patti and which one is Cathy?
Dunno ... Truth, does a hot-dog make you lose control?
