legalities of condo conversion

Hi there, wondering if anyone can let me know what options we have. Presently renting in a building that received approval for condo conversion. Lease is up in July and would love to stay but was told that rent would double if we did..Can they do that and can they force us to leave. We have been excellent tenants,,,paid rent on time, quiet, neat freaks *almost and really a landlords" dream...according to our doorman.. Thanks for any info...any leads on Greenwich,Union Sq or Gramercy area 2 bedrooms>>>>:)
