Rip-off! Avoid at all costs! SCAM!
They may be good landlords, as the previous reviewer stated, but as a rental agency they are a total scam.
Gonofee/ K&R Realty/http://www.triumphproperty.com takes your application fee and promises that they will find you an apartment. We applied for several apartments and even though, we met all of their requirements, they made us jump thru hoops with all kinds of absurd excuses and extra requirements. They took weeks to give us a simple answer and when they did they would find a negative forcing us to keep searching and waiting.
We began noticing that a lot of the apartments that we applied for were on the market for quite a while, even though, it was evident that these apartment were in great demand. Then, an insider told us that often times the way these real estate businesses stay afloat is by taking application fees from many applicants for the same apartments over and over but with the intention of NOT renting to any of them, just as K&R Realty/http://GONOFEE.com did!!!
While we waited and waited for some sort of answer, we were forced to look elsewhere and got approved and offered 3 other apartments. Within weeks, it became obvious to us that our history and income requirements weren't the problem; it was K&R Realty taking us for a ride! We dealt specifically with Camille LLewellyn who turned out to be totally incompetent.
It's been 5 months since our nightmare with them and we still keep getting their "email updates". And sure enough, several of the apartments we applied for are still in the market and with allegedly reduced rents! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?
Please save your money, beware and look elsewhere.

wow, i was offered $750 for recommending somebody to them. if you are right, they will pocket yet another fee and not ever deliver the $750 as nobody gets approved? even during periods of very low vacancy htey will have empty ones for more than half a year in a ready to move condition.

I’ve long been suspicious of these guys. They present themselves as a no frills landlord/managing agent, but their availabilities are 1) unnervingly consistent and 2) just a little too good to be true. Like Madoff. No personal experience with them, but I’m 100% prepared to believe they’re scammers. Thanks for raising the alarm.

I have had a great experience with K & R Realty and the GONOFEE team. We applied on a Monday and were approved by Thursday. They do look at credit pretty closely. They told us from the beginning that if we had any issues with our credit (housing court, accounts in collection, or delinquencies) we would need to have these cleared up before the approval. They even asked if they wanted us to run the credit before taking the money. Of course the credit was fine and we were approved within the week. The entire GONOFEE team was very responsive and helpful. I am planning on referring many friends to GONOFEE and collecting my $750.00 (That is a ton of money I would love to have in my pocket!)...
We did not pay any fees for the apartment except for the credit check fee... This is what they advertise.
We had a great experience with GoNoFee and would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for a cheap Apartment.

I also had a very good experience with GONOFEE. They only offer no fee apartment rentals.
I currently live in a gonofee building and the process was very easy.
They have a lot of great buildings that are all well maintained. They offer the cheapest apartments in harlem. There maintenance department is great to work with as well. They took care of all my needs.
I rented through K & R a few years ago -- 9 actually...I getting so old-- (before they had the GONOFEE brand) in Manhattan Val (108th and Columbus) and had a great experience. It was simple, cheap, and clean. They were the best deal in town. The only gripe most people had at that time was that they "gentrify" random blocks and fill their buildings with young college kids who don't really "fit" the neighborhood. There was a bit of a kurfuffle about the displaced Dominican population. However, there was no scam or anything like that and I doubt there is now.

I also had a reasonably good experience renting from them a couple years ago -- the approval process was more extensive than I've been through in the past for other places but I didn't really have any trouble or issues with it. Now, many people in my building are very unhappy with the service they've received since moving in (I haven't had maintenance issues in my apartment, so it hasn't really come up for me), but I haven't heard of anyone having a bad experience with the approval process.

Also, I have no idea what they're charging for application fees now (I didn't pay anything other than a $50 credit check fee, I don't think), but hard to imagine they could be making more money off applications fees than the $1000's per month they would get from actually renting out the apartment! I worked with a different individual, it sounds like, but if there's a problem with the approval process I think incompetance is a more likely explanation than some elaborate scam.

There's nothing easy in NYC, especially if you DON'T have money.
If it's too good to be true, no matter how beaten down you might already be, it's still probably a good idea to be skeptical.

I just moved into a K&R building in Harlem last week and I can assure you there is no scam. I did not have to pay any application fee and while you do have to fit all of their requirements for approval some of which are stringnet, this is New York City, nothing cheap comes easy. The people I dealt with were friendly and competent and I will definetely recommend K&R and gonofee to my friends.

Really? The post just above me is from "krrealty" and I am supposed to believe them about...K&R?
ANYWAY....they are legit, yes, but also sleazy. They roped me into a crapfest of a building with a TON of violations, ones publicly available (I know now!) on the city's website for such. So I would never trust them. But they did not steal my fee, no.

I rented out my 1 bed and moved into a large 2 bed with these guys. I am happy with them. Clean, well looked after.
Right, the yelp reviews verify my stance. They manage buildings well, but the brokerage is a bunch of scam artists. I would NOT recommend them for buildings they do not manage, not ever, for any reason, unless you are a complete fool.

My husband and I have had a great experience with K&R. Yes, the application process was tedious, but they were very responsive in helping us put all the info together and getting approval. They were also very helpful during the lease signing process; they patiently answered questions and never rushed us through the process. Since living in the building, I've never had a problem getting responses from staff via phone/email regarding maintenance, billing issues, etc. The building is well maintained, and the building staff are friendly and helpful.
I've lived in NYC nearly 10 years and have dealt with other nightmare management companies. This is by far my best experience thus far.

I was able to get my apartment but at the same time dealing with Josh Kaufman was miserable. He was impossible to reach, never got back to us on a timely manner. My roomate and I were supposed to move in august 1st but we recieved no word back on our apartment and were forced to store our things for a month before finally being able to move in at the end of august. Trying to reach Josh, our agent, during this time was like a white house screening process and even if you called his cell he refused to return messages or answer. I am not sure if this is representation of the entire organization but deal with Josh was the most miserable experience I have had in my apt hunting experiences.

Scam warning signs here:
1. you gave someone an application fee before seeing an apartment
2. Taking more than a day to get a response back
3. Seamed 'to good to be true'
4. Their website has very little company info and no personal info

report abuse K&R offers nice clean apartments, I've been living in them for several years.
Unfortunately, they don't care how good of a tenant you are, and therefore have no problem raising your rent several hundred dollars a month after your lease is up even though neighboring apartments rent for less. K&R loves to inflate the value of their apartments and keep them listed for months at a high price to justify why they are raising your rent.
Also, Joshua Kaufman is completely incompetent and seriously needs to consider finding a new industry to work in.
what defines a "good tenant" in your view?

Although my apartment was clean and well maintained my experience with K&R was terrible. I attribute the cleanliness and maintenance to Gustavo the Super not K&R. When it comes to 'Management" they fail miserably, when I inquired about a bike space in the bike room I was told to take a specific spot and that I would be charged $30. Not only can they not charge you for a bike spot but my space had be taken for months. Needless to say the situation was never resolved. Days would go by without a response when trying to get a hold of an employee. The complicated lease leaves room for them to adjust rent at will, I essentially had to find a new apartment after one year because they raised my rent considerably. Save yourself the trouble and don't let them over charge you for an apartment that is not worth nearly what they are asking.

SCAMMM!!!
Time frame of below issue with this company: 8/21/12- 9/2/12
If you are looking for an apartment, I strongly advise looking somewhere else! The apartment as you would think is far too good to be true!!!
My roommate and I were looking for an apartment in Harlem when we happened to come upon a Fredrick Douglas apartment that was the perfect place; bright, sunny, modern, and open with the vintage charm that older building has to offer. We applied to the apartment, met all of their requirements and then some (which is an unusually large amount of background info on their applicants)... but wait for it%u2026 "your approved...IF..." we did A B C... is all we got from this company%u2026 When we produced A B C she (the employee working on the case) piled on even more conditions and requirements... After she was done with us we were then given to her supervisor who had nothing but attitude when we inquired about apartment (it was going on a week worth of waiting at this point)...
We were finally approved for AN apartment with the company by Wednesday the 29th (a whole weekend wasted by the way, we could have been looking for more apartments) unfortunately they said we were not allowed to move into the apartment we had applied to because it was for legally married couples only and they were treating us as a couple... we are both men (so they assumed we were gay and said we would have a lot of problems living there) .... Humoring them and with quite a tight deadline (we would be homeless by the 1st) we reluctantly went to go see their identical apartment on Manhattan ave ... a 2300 dollar convertible 1 bed. (our requested apartment was a massive 2 bed) ...the same price as the apartment we wanted but missing a bedroom.. they thought this would be a better situation for my roommate and I (two options here share a small bedroom or some one live illegally in the living room that just so happen to have a random wall in it to separate the space.. Mind you they advertised this to us as Identical to our desired apartment and as a two bed room (false advertising on Craigslist if you see an add for 2300 on Manhattan ave by central park)... once again to good to be true...
We finally then went back to the management company stating that we wanted the Fredric Douglas blvd apartment they said they would get back to us by end of day Friday (8/31)%u2026 end of day came and went we finally called and managed to get Chris on the phone who proceeded to yell at my broker and my self stating its our fault we didn%u2019t get the apartment%u2026 Reasoning that we didn%u2019t get the papers in that were required (which we had and they still have)... out of desperation we asked for our papers back only to be refused the file (which contain and unheard of amount of personal information on my roommate and our families) we are still homeless living with friends and family and are struggling to find an apartment because most have been rented because August is the busy season and there is simply not enough to go around.
K&R reality is not only a scam but are discriminating against same sex/ homosexual roommates... they have stolen our money our time our lively hood and our faith in this city... Stay away at all cost...
