Discussion about
Is there some formula for how much painting an apartment should cost? Like a psf #? Assume new construction & freshly painted an awful white and want to put some color on the walls. No ceilings, no molding (will leave white). The only extras will be a few plaster repairs for where we are putting some lighting fixtures in. Thanks.

You'll want to paint the ceilings and trim. The new color on the wall will make them look dingy, and you'll end up painting them anyway. Do it all at the same time.

Thanks for answering. The entire apartment was just painted as part of the punch list, they just used a stark white that I wouldn't have chosen, possibly super white, which IS what I'd have chosen for the ceiling, plus the ceilings are really high.

Anyway, I got one estimate and it is almost 9K for about 2,800 sqft, no ceilings, no trim. Does that sound reasonable to you?

also, if you know a good and reasonably priced painter, I'd love a rec to comp to.

Yes, that sounds extremely reasonable.

Seven years ago I spent $2,000 on a 750 square foot place, with only standard-height (9 foot) ceilings.

oh, OK. As a former renter I haven't had to pay for a paint job in a long time. I thought it was funny when the painter reminded me ahead of getting the estimate not to forget that paint is really expensive these days.

Thanks again.

Hi Mack,

If you still need a painter recommendation, feel free to contact me @ tracy5760@gmail.com. I had my entire apartment painted-portions had to be skim-coated as well. They did a great job and were less than 2 other quotes I got!
